This is such bad news. Downplaying that an airborne vascular virus that affects multiple organs and the immune system is only dangerous to so-called at-risk “vulnerable” people is a total bullshit response to the ongoing pandemic.
It also feeds into the THEM vs US mentality, with people erroneously believing that because they think they are fit and have a healthy immune system that Covid poses no risk to them, and then treating so-called “vulnerable” people with either pity or disdain while totally denying that Long Covid exists (until it happens to them) and behaving, well, selfishly.
I’m still not sure how much this year in Spain actually differs from the previous Covid booster shots (winter 2022/2023), as those were also available with a roll-out programme that started out with the elderly but eventually covered everyone. So it’s not clear if this year the usual Flu shot campaign will include getting an updated Covid booster, or if you will have to belong to one of the “target groups” to be eligible. In any case, the Covid boosters have never been mandatory and I don’t even think the initial vaccines were either, other than being required by certain industries.
The danger is if Covid vaccines and boosters are denied to people who want them simply because they don’t fit into this random and ever-changing criteria of who are perceived to need them. They don’t do this with the Flu jab. Anyone can get one. So why would it different with Covid? Why do you have to somehow prove you are eligible?? It’s not like most countries don’t have enough of the booster shots to go around.
I think that THIS particular sort of “official” disinformation/misinformation (see quote below, from the article) irks the most because it downplays the actual reality of SARS-CoV-2 and is still trying to convince people that it’s “just a cold”. It’s pretty clear by now that Covid is much more than a respiratory illness, let alone “just a cold” and it’s also clear that nobody develops immunity to Covid (just like with Flu, hence annual boosters!) and that the “let ‘er rip” global approach to Covid continues to enable new strains of this novel coronavirus to basically get better and better at making us sick and rendering previous vaccinations and boosters useless.
What if I haven’t been vaccinated against Covid for two years?
If they do not meet any condition of vulnerability and do not belong to the target groups, vaccination is not recommended for those under 60 years of age this year. “At this time, considering the epidemiological situation and the acquired immunity of the population, vaccination against Covid-19 in people not included in the target groups is not justified,” the ministry of health said. In other words, the vaccination two years ago and the infections of the disease during the last four and a half years have generated sufficient immunity not to make mass vaccination necessary.
We are ALL vulnerable. Denying or downplaying the need for an updated Covid vaccine booster to the general public in the midst of an ongoing pandemic is unconscionable. Honestly, all of this makes me sick. I only hope it doesn’t end up actually making me (or you!) sick too.

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from a guy who was building up a tour company here and had decided to call it Azahar Tours… then he saw I was already using this name and had been, well forever, and he asked if it would bother me if he also used it, even though his tours weren’t food related. I told him that I really appreciated him asking and that, yes, the azahar brand has been associated with me since 2005 and so to avoid any confusion it might be better if he chose another name that was all his own. And he did. Respect.
But not this wanker. The Sevilla Tapas brand has also been recognised as mine since 2009 (2007 if you count when the food blog started) and basically, Sevilla Tapas Tours (as generic as it may sound) has been my food tour name, again, since forever, because… I got there first. But what I didn’t do was pay for every possible website domain that might sound like me. In fact, since I barely knew what I was doing back in 2007 my main domain is a bit messy. But whatever. People still find me because I’ve been online for almost 20 years and I have a respected reputation. One that I think I have earned.
Then this wanker comes along, some guy here who started doing food tours, and in fact mostly seems to be doing my tours (as so many of the copycat food tour companies do these days) but then touts himself to be THE authentic food tour experience in Sevilla. Whatever. It only began to irk when he started calling himself Seville Tapas Tour all over social media, cos like, that’s me. Then today I saw this sponsored ad on instagram calling himself the REAL Seville Tapas Tour… wtf.
Don’t get me wrong. This guy makes no difference to me in terms of work. I always have more tour requests than I can handle (hence, my angels). What irks is that he knows he is using my well-known brand name. I guess because he is hoping people will confuse him with me? That this might drive some business his way? How pathetic is that? Because he does know who I am. We see each other in the street (he ignores me) and I mean come on. I just don’t get it. And I am certainly not flattered.

Well this could also describe my lovely friend Reyes but in this case it also describes the VERY BEST hake I have ever tasted in my life. No kidding. Reyes and I were out having an early celebration lunch for my Sevilla 31st Anniversary (coming up this Monday but I’ll be stuck in an MRI machine, hence the early celebration). Anyhow… we went to try our pal Iván’s original Ivantxu Espacio Bistronómico (having previously gone to his new restaurant La Carmela) and we weren’t disappointed. We were also smart enough to let Iván choose our dishes and when he said – you MUST try the hake – we did. And I mean, I like hake but I did not expect this. Pan-grilled line-caught hake served with a gazillion slivers of sweet garlic and “pan potatoes”. None of these words actually describe this dish. The hake was lightly seared, tender yet still firm, the garlic caramalised and melty and those fucking potatoes. One of the most simple dishes – santurce style, look it up – but in the deft hands of Iván turned into something magical. Later Reyes said that she was going to think about this hake for the rest of her life, and well, me too.

The hundred year old “San Jacinto Ficus” that was brutally cut down two years ago has been pronounced officially dead by city council. I took the photo above earlier this month, concerned at how badly it had deteriorated from even a year ago. When it was first “rescued” in 2022 after public outcry we were told that city council would take over responsibility of its care and maintenance from the church, which seemed optimistic at the time. But now it seems this was always the outcome they wanted as the tree was left to wither and slowly die over these past two years. No words.
