What a great birthday! I met up with Eduardo @differentspain and Saray @saraypineda for a lunchtime tapeo that lasted until very late in the afternoon. We stopped at three different tapas bars and had lovely snacks at each one. Then Saray had to go so Edu and I went off for a bit of birthday cake and rosé cava. After that I (finally) picked up my train tickets and then spent a quiet and cosy evening at home with the cats. Woke up in the wee hours to the Return of the Christmas Cold and tossed and turned for the rest of the night. Today I’m staying in – and staying warm – so that I will hopefully be in good shape to catch that early train to Barcelona mañana! Feeling both nervous and excited…

Every now and then on one of my Sevilla Tapas Tours I not only have a great time showing people around the best tapas bars in town, but I also make a friend. And in this case I actually made two friends! I met Kyran and Claire at the end of October when I picked them up at their hotel … nice touch was when they invited me for a glass of cava at the lovely patio bar. And from there it was a fun night out with two very adventurous eaters who also love cooking and drinking sherry. So I was delighted when they stayed in touch later on via Twitter and Instagram, and I was totally floored the other day when they sent me this amazing Christmas pressie! The Irish Beef Book. Well.
I like to think I’m a good cook (because I am!) but I have never really mastered the art of cooking meat at home, other than slow-cooked recipes. And indeed this fabulous book by Pat Whelan and Katy McGuinness has an entire chapter entitled “long & slow” but it also goes beyond meat dishes and includes great side dishes including an amazing looking recipe for individual Yorksire puddings, which I can’t wait to try. I think Mr Anchovy and WeeRascal would also do well with this book. It also turns out that most recipes are adaptable (not a lotta beef here in Spain) so I won’t have to ask Kyran and Claire to send me an Irish cow…
Thank you lovelies! See you again in the spring!

So there is this tapas & sherry pairing event going on in Sevilla, from the 1st – 17th of November, during which 62 bars will offer a select tapa paired with a sherry or manzanilla wine. And I am totally ON THIS. Of course visiting 62 bars in just over two weeks is only slightly impossible so it’s a good thing at least a dozen of the bars on the list aren’t places I’m interested in. And to ease both the wallet and liver, Peter is helping me out. This means that we go to each bar and share both the tapa and the sherry, so – for example – we can visit four places and end up having just 2 drinks and 2 tapas but 4 different experiences and can judge which pairings work best at more places.
You can follow all the action on azahar’s Sevilla blog and also on my Instagram.
