August 10th is San Lorenzo day and keeping up with a tradition that began (for me) a couple of years ago I headed over to the Antigua Abacería San Lorenzo to take part in the festivities. Grilled flesh was on offer (the martyr San Lorenzo was put to a slow and painful death on top of a large gridiron with live coals beneath it and, the legend concludes that, after enduring the pain for a very long time he made his famous cheerful remark, “I’m well done. Turn me over!”) as well as a typical white wine punch from Huelva called ponche alosnero. San Lorenzo is also the patron saint of cooks and chefs. It all works. It was a very cultural week. I went to three new (well, new for me) museums in Málaga this visit. Top row: Museum of Popular Arts & Traditions, Museum of Glass & Crystal, Interactive Music Museum. Then I re-visited the Contemporary Art Centre and the Carmen Thyssen Gallery. All in two days! I will (hopefully!) be writing more about these places on Azahar Spain soon. But if you are planning a trip to Málaga then check them all out. As well as the Automobile Museum, the Russian Art Museum and – at least from the outside – the shiny new Pompidou.

biznaga guy

So this happens in Málaga every summer. You find the biznaga sellers all over the place selling, well, biznagas. Which are clusters of jasmine blossoms stuck onto a multi-spiked dried plant (ammi visnaga). And they are very pretty as you can see. But as much as I like a gentle whiff of jasmine blossom from time to time, for example passing by a jasmine bush in Sevilla, having a biznaga anywhere near me is a total attack on my olfactories (so you can imagine what twenty of them can do). It’s just WAY TOO MUCH. But hey, this is Málaga and they love their biznagas. Just keep them away from me in enclosed spaces, and especially anywhere that food and wine are being enjoyed.

Great being here though. My second home.
