birthday-boy

Boy, was he surprised!  🙂

It was Nog’s birthday yesterday and I thought it would be fun to do something a little different than the usual “birthday lunch”. So the other day I spoke to my friend María Paz who runs Bar Campanario and asked about setting up a birthday party for six (including her). The other guests were Susan, Pablo and Agustín (Dr A), who were instructed to arrive at the restaurant 15 minutes before us, sign the card and be there to shout SURPRISE when Nog & I walked in. And it all went perfectly to plan …

al-aljibe

The other day I mentioned taking an afternoon walk in order to check out an area of town called the Alameda (previously dodgy, now up & coming trendy) because I wanted to include some restaurants there on Sevilla Tapas.  I chose about half a dozen that I thought looked quite good, got names and addresses, business cards where they had them, and felt like I’d done a good job of researching the neighbourhood. One of the places on my list was called Jan El Jalily, specialising in middle Eastern food, so I told Susan about it (ever since Morocco we are all about the couscous) and we decided to check it out last Tuesday for lunch. But it was not to be…

sunny-sunday

Well, not really. Especially because it was such a gorgeous sunny Sunday and I was feeling just fine after my week-long post ferry ride from hell ordeal. I woke up early and started working on Sevilla Tapas, which I’ve actually been doing all week. Check it out and let me know what you think of the changes. Kim has been very generously helping me out with some geeky stuff I don’t know how to do, which has really made a difference. And today I stuck in a couple affiliate ads, including a way-cool Amazon widget in the sidebar showing books I’ve chosen that relate to Spain, food and travel.

By about noon I was just starting to go cross-eyed when Nog asked if I would like to go out for lunch with him. What with me being away, and then in bed a lot of this past week, we haven’t actually seen each other much lately, so it sounded like a very good idea. Nog suggested Yebra, because we hadn’t been there since zoomer was in town last October, and it’s also a 45-minute walk away, which meant we would have a nice walk there and back…

pablo-carbonara

Honestly, I just forgot!

Pablo insists that he reminded me when we got together on my birthday, but as I don’t even remember going to bed that night I think expecting me to remember a birthdate was a bit overly optimistic. Especially as Pablo & I have only recently started seeing each other again, after about six years of not being in touch (otherwise his birthday would be in my trusty daybook). But never mind. Yesterday I made amends by making Pablo a belated birthday lunch including his favourite casa az dish – spaghetti carbonara. Well, except I used tallarines (in English?) because I’ve recently come across a brand I really like. An arrugula salad and garlic bread on the side, a glass or two of cava … it was very nice.

the-curious-case-of-benjamin-button

Banal, boring and waayyy too long …

As I have mentioned here on many occasions, there is only one cinema here in Sevilla that shows films in their original version (not dubbed into Spanish) so there is usually a very limited selection of English films. So imagine my surprise when I saw that there were four films in English showing this weekend that I’d heard good things about: Benjamin Button, Revolutionary Road, Frost/ Nixon and Doubt.  And then early yesterday afternoon I got a message from Flor, inviting me out to a movie and asked me to choose between Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon (she’d already seen the other two) … and, just like always happens with supermarket queues, I chose the wrong one!
