A quick postcard to say how much I’m enjoying my chemo-free pre-op ‘holiday’. Talk about carping the diem. I can’t afford to go anywhere or even do much, but I’ve been sooooo enjoying feeling relatively healthy, taking walks, being with friends, drinking icy cold beverages … heigh-ho, just another day in paradise!  🙂

birthday boy!

Yesterday was Steve’s mumbledy-something birthday!

After having some mid-day birthday cava at Bar Campanario Sara invited us all out for lunch, which was an excellent opportunity to try out an Argentinian restaurant I came across when Nog and I were out cycling the other day. And it was fabulous! We ate so much food that I thought I was going to have to lie down for awhile about half-way through. And the Argentinian cabernet was also delicious. After our meal we were brought some orangy-tasting Argentinian liqueur (on the house) that was very nice. Then the boys ordered dessert. Steve’s came with candles because I’d mentioned to our excellent waiters that it was his birthday. And then Rafael brought over a bottle of cava for us (also on the house) … at which point I had to give up because I couldn’t drink any more.

But a wonderful time was had by all. Afterwards I had to stop by Steve and Sara’s lovely air-conditioned apartment and lie down for awhile before heading home, and Nog went off to teach a class. Then I came home and rested some more, and unfortunately had to turn down Sara’s invitation to return to their place for some more birthday celebrating. Damn chemo!

Here are photos of Milonga’s Argentinian Restaurant.

That’s Sara, me and Steve

They arrived late yesterday evening and we did the usual looking around for somewhere to eat that usually ends up with an extensive tour of the Barrio Santa Cruz until we find a place with a free table. We were eventually seated at  Casa Roman and had a very nice meal there. And later on we went for a nightcap on the rooftop terraza of the Hotel Doña Maria.

I’m so happy they’re here … for two whole weeks!

colon club

Today I joined the Colon Club.

I’d first checked out this site shortly after being diagnosed and read some of the stuff on the ‘Colon Talk’ message board, but somehow didn’t feel like I could talk to ‘total strangers’ about what was going on. I think in part because it hadn’t really sunk in yet. Then this morning I had another look at it and decided to take the plunge and become a member.

When I was talking to raincoaster on the phone the other day she suggested that I look for a support group, or even start a private blog to vent if I needed to, which were both good suggestions. But I’m really not a group person and I find the stuff I post here about cancer stuff supplies enough venting  (and the wonderful caring responses I get really help me a lot).

But the Colon Club online support group seems perfect for me because there is no physical commitment for me to be somewhere – I can stop in whenever I like for as long as I like.  Also, as this site is specifically about colon cancer, I’m already learning a lot by reading about other people’s experiences.

I’ll still be writing about my progress and experiences here, but it feels good to have another outlet where I can talk to people who have been through similar stuff.

asian confusion

My dear friend Pipocas took me out for a very nice Sunday lunch yesterday. The original plan had been to go to the new Italian tapas place that I recently discovered, but it turned out that during August they close on Sundays, so instead we went to an Asian fusion restaurant that I’d read about. I’m always keen to try out recommended international restaurants here because after 16 years even the very best tapas can get a bit tedious. And so off we went, promptly getting lost and having to look the place up on Pipocas’s crackberry. But we eventually got there and it looked quite promising. . .
