How the EU saves, and kills, the lynx

So maybe Europe is giving money for preserving the lynx – it’s given 26m euros (£18m) – but the agricultural funds give money that helps destroy the lynx’s habitat.

The same institution is protecting and destroying habitat at the same time.

Fuck golf courses and fuck fake-tasting strawberries … there isn’t enough water here. And how awful it would be to see such a gorgeous creature become extinct. Yes, the dunes are spreading, but the water that exists at the moment could be put to better use.

Doñana Park is about an hour’s drive from where I live. I know a couple of people who work there – biologists mostly working with rabbits, birds and bats. But the lynx is the symbol of Doñana and I guess, being a cat person myself, their plight moves me. But not just me. A few years ago a student of mine (mid-twenties, well-educated) came up for his class and could barely speak when he came into the room. His face was all red, he was actually sputtering! I asked him what was wrong and after he sat down and had a drink of water he told me … “You know your neighbour on the first floor? Her door was open when I walked past just now and I saw she had a lynx pelt nailed to the entrance wall!”

It was actually a traumatic experience for him. I’ve since seen it myself. But these neighbours are disgusting people on so many levels that nailing the skin of an endangered species to their wall is actually not terribly surprising to me.

I’m certainly no big-time environmental activist, but fuck man – golf courses in Andalucía??? One golf course uses more water in a day than a village of 10,000 people. And tasteless strawberries that are sold for export … huh? Nice to see the world has its priorities straight, as usual.

The mind reels . . .

Two tired and thirsty bikes . . .

Actually it was more like two tired and thirsty first-time-in-years cyclists (2 years for me, about 20 for Nog) . I took this photo after we’d stopped for a cold beer at a little outdoor bar in a park near the river. All in all we were out about two and a half hours but the first half hour or so was spent trying to find a bike station that had any bikes. I guess early Saturday evening is a popular time to go out for a bike ride.

And the reason this is our first time out since I mentioned sending in our applications over here on this post is because Nog just got his card this week. First they lost his application and then the card went missing and they had to send out a duplicate. So we basically missed out getting to use the bikes while we were on holiday, but at least we can go out cycling now.

Anyhow, it was great fun and good exercise. Even though we’re both quite pooped it’s a nice tired feeling. So off to veg a bit and watch yet another episode of The West Wing (latest television series addiction).

Hi ho, hi ho . . . f_musicalnote.gif

It actually feels okay going back to work – especially as I don’t have any classes until tomorrow 😉 . But today is still a ‘work day’ as I got up at 7 o’clock and went to yoga class and the rest of the day will be spent organising the spare room for teaching.

And this evening we’re going out to a job interview. In fact, if all goes well Nog may be offered two jobs in a village just outside Sevilla, which would be fabulous (and also make the trip out there worthwhile). We’re just waiting to hear back from the first job to find out if it’s going to start in October as planned and then go to the interview for the second one – I’ll be tagging along as ‘the translator’. So fingers crossed that it all works out because it would be a great opportunity for Nog.

Otherwise and that, it’s just nice to be getting into a different routine. And I got some wonderful news yesterday – two very dear friends will be visiting in October, so that makes me very happy and gives me something to look forward to. And so … no post-holiday blues for me. 🙂

Yikes – it’s another blog!!!

As many of you know, about a year or so ago I started a page here called sevilla tapas which included short write-ups on some of my favourite restaurants and tapa bars that also linked to photos on my Fotki page.

This morning I was adding to and reorganising the Fotki tapitas album and I got to thinking that it might be more interesting to have everything together. So what I’ve done is start a new blog that is set up so that each restaurant and tapa bar has its own category. You can click on the drop-down widget on the right and find all posts relating to a particular place there. Each place will have at least two posts to start with – one with general information and the other will be for photos.

I’ve only got one category finished so far (for Modesto Restaurante) if you want to check it out and let me know what you think. I’m planning to write a longer ‘review’ for each place – the one there for Modesto at the moment was just taken from the page here to use as a temporary example.

The link below will take you to the welcome page. On the sidebar widget look under Restaurant and Tapa Bar Categories for Modesto and check out the posts. Each post has a link to the other.

So, these guys are playing underneath my balcony right now,
Tuesday night at 10.30 pm…

Quite a nice surprise to come home to after the usual evening walk. I first came across these guys playing in a square near here last November. A fun (and very loud) mix of stuff – kind of a cross between a New Orleans jazz band and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. Lots of horns and percussion, singing done through a megaphone. Very theatrical, like street cabaret.

Anyhoo, so much for watching Chinatown tonight . . . 🙂

Here is their website: Banda de la Maria
