holidays, Malaga, summer

A little iPhone art here, drawn while I was on the train to Málaga last August, passing through olive groves. And I may be seeing them again soon!

With Azar’s new found trust in Jessica I started thinking that I might be able to get away this summer after all. Given how frail he’s been lately I would never have left him on his own with just a “sitter” coming in to check up on him. Which still meant I could go away and leave Nog in charge, but he kind of deserves a summer break as well.

And so I spoke to Manolo and it’s almost certain that we’ll be able to use his fabulous apartment the first week of July (well, five nights), which will also free up casa az so that Jessica can have a nice romantic break here with Thomas (if he can make it down). Win win!

I’m so excited about this even though it’s over a month away. I just love Málaga and Manolo’s apartment is in such a great location. It’s also been redecorated so should be looking fab, and it will really feel like “going home”. Every time I go to Málaga I fall in love with it a little bit more.

I won’t find out for sure if I can have the apartment until a couple of weeks before (fingers crossed!) which means it might be hard to get train tickets.  I had wanted to leave on the Monday but realised that is my next oncology appointment, so it will be Tuesday – Sunday instead. But at least I’ll get my holiday in before the next PET scan, just in case…

Have you got any summer travel plans?

travel, trips

For some reason Istanbul has been coming up on Twitter and in other conversations lately, and I find myself filled with a longing to visit, though my heart is also drawn to places I’ve already been to like Lisbon, Tangier, London…

So just for the heck of it, here are my top five dream destinations of places I’ve not yet been, in no particular order:

  • Instanbul
  • Florence
  • Edinburgh
  • New York
  • Greek Islands

What are yours?

oh right, flip, not spin…

christmas, london

I never get these things right. It’s also hard to believe it’s only been ten days since I first found out about the possible dream come true of going to London at Christmastime – feels like this indecisiveness has been going on forever. I tried to let it go and, short of physcially flipping a coin, I thought and re-thought all the pros & cons … and ended up thinking so much that I lost my flight this morning. Or, found out it had gone up by 100€ overnight, which is the same thing. Right after I had decided that the gut feeling to go to London was the right one, which ended up being my coin flip, waiting until this morning to book my flight. Once it came up tails, so to speak, I realised how much I really wanted to go.

So now I’m just waiting to hear back from S (whose house & cat I would be looking after) because I’ve actually found another flight just as cheap, but it leaves on Tuesday. Which means I’d end up missing S and her family (they leave tomorrow) but it seems the neighbours could let me in and show me around. And then I’d come back to Sevilla on January 6th, when S’s lodger gets back to London, which means I’d also be home for my birthday (7th).

I know, I know, I should have just flipped the damn coin rather than spinning it in every which way direction. But without that process I don’t think I’d have felt as sure as I do now that  taking this week in London would be a VERY GOOD THING to do. Especially as I just received two Paypal prezzies which will take care of about 2/3 of the transportation costs. So please keep fingers crossed that I haven’t driven S totally nuts with all my dithering and that before I go to bed I will have a confirmed flight to London Heathrow on Tuesday…

christmas, london

Something I have always wanted to do  is see London at Christmastime, even though some die-hard Londoners like Steve tell me it’s all a bunch o’ nuthin. But I really do love Christmas and all that goes with it, and since getting cancer it does always cross my mind (as it does on every important calendar date) that this might be my last one. And so imagine how thrilled I was when a London-based journalist asked on Twitter if there was someone who would like to house & cat sit over the holidays! I spent days fantasizing about having a house to myself – though with a cat so I wouldn’t get lonely – and being able to work and re-connect with some of the people I met last September. And of course see Steve & Sara and the Hackey Gang again, as well as Lizzie who would be in town for family get togethers. I rationalised the cost of the airfare as a “business expense” (which is actually true) and calculated that I wouldn’t be eating out as much as when I was there last time. Really, the idea was to get lots of work done “at home”, meet up with a few friends and biz contacts, have a couple of nice meals out, SEE THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS, and then come home again.

Then I found out last night that the house & cat sitting gig is for two weeks, which made me re-think the logistics and especially the cost. Plus Azar has been feeling a bit poorly of late and I thought it would be awful if something happened to him while I was off looking after someone else’s cat. Even though Nog would be here looking after the boys, I’m not sure about him dealing with any sort of health emergency. So I guess I’m resigned to not going now, though I’m still waiting to hear back from the journalist with more info. It feels like being pulled in about ten different directions even though there are clearly only two options. In other circumstances I would jump at this chance because who knows when an opportunity like this will come up again. But the timing just isn’t right. What should I do?

seville, wine, wine tasting

So this is what I did last nigh!

It was another free wine tasting (cata) at La Azotea Vinos & Más, this time put on by Bodegas Habla from Extremadura. I like to go to these because I always learn something and meet new people, and it’s a free night out! I invited María Paz from Bar Campanario and that ended up being a great choice for many reasons. First of all because she is very sociable and talks to everybody, and of course knows a lot of people from being in the biz. And as I’m also rather chatty we ended up getting invited to the bodega by the owner, who said we could stay there and they have horses and blah, blah… and María Paz said no problem, we could go in her car (!). And she repeated that offer when we went over to the bar for some tapas and ran into someone she knew who invited us to Córdoba (!!). Then her two sons Emilio and Alvaro showed up and they got to reminiscing about when they used to take English classes with me (they were 6 & 8 then and are 20 & 22 now), which ended up with them deciding to start classes with me again next week (!!!). So all in all, a good night out, plus I got to catch up with María Paz, whom I haven’t seen in ages. Also got lots of photos and stuff to put in my Seville blog.

The bad news is that I got into a big argument with my landlord as I still can’t pay the rent, which totally stressed me out, but I’m choosing to think about all the positive stuff that happened yesterday and the other good things happening, as it looks like quite a busy week coming up.

How was your day?
