alcazar 2020 (1)
Last week I went to the Alcázar with my friend Corinna, the first time either of us had been there for ages. Thing is, it’s free for Sevilla residents but it’s always so bloody crowded that we usually just can’t be bothered. But as they had just reopened the palace and gardens, and it was before foreign tourists were allowed to arrive, we took advantage. And it was lovely. There were a few people, mostly Spanish, but no tour groups, and we often found ourselves with nobody around us in the gardens. Heaven.

Here are some pics…

Last week when I was invited to the press conference at the Alcázar to announce this year’s Michelin Gala in Sevilla, I decided to spend a bit of time wandering around after the event finished. I mean, we were already inside! Thing is, although I have free entrance to this amazing place anytime, since I am a resident of Sevilla, it’s almost impossible to get in.

And so, I checked out a few of my favourite spots, including the peacefully beautiful baños de Doña Padilla. Of course what you can’t see in this photo is the bus-load of teenaged French students behind me, and various groups of other tourists, all clamouring for this very same “peaceful” shot. I beat them to it.

Poor Sevilla. I fear she is going to turn into Venice.

Every year the Alcázar opens its gothic palace to house a three-day sale of convent cookies, sweets, etc. made by cloistered nuns. These can be bought most days at the various convents, by placing your order in front of a shut door, putting your money in a “lazy susan” opening, and then your order appears without having seen anybody. This has actually become a sort of tourist attraction, though I’ve never done it myself since I don’t really eat sweets. But I like going to this event and seeing everything laid out, since I am there to buy gifts. And it’s always nice to spend time in the Alcázar. If you’re in Sevilla this weekend, check it out.
