copyright confusion & facebook faux pas

Yesterday I found myself tagged on my Sevilla Tapas Facebook account in about ten photos, which then showed up in my timeline, and after that my notifications became cluttered with comments on these “photos of me” by people I don’t know. And they weren’t even photos of me, but of tapas from a local bar. So I spent about 15 minutes tracking down all the photos, removing the tags, and then wrote to the women who posted them, asking her to please not do that again. And I also wrote an entry on my Facebook timeline that said: “Please stop tagging me in photos I am not in just to promote your business. Thank you.”

I mean, it’s bad enough when people leave links on my timeline to stuff that is clearly just blatant self-promotion, and not to something that is being shared because someone thinks I’d be interested in it. But tagging people in photos like this is actually an abuse of the Facebook tagging system. It’s meant to be used to let someone know you’ve posted a photo of them on your FB page, not as an attention-seeking cheap trick to get people to look at your stuff.

Anyhoodle, my friend Del (aka WeeRascal) replied to this – probably because he doesn’t like me dissing Facebook  😉 – by referring to the collages I did of those wonderful old photos of Semana Santa in Sevilla the other day, one of which I also posted here on casa az, which have my ©azahar-sevilla.com watermark on them. He questioned the ethics of putting my copyright on other people’s photos, and at first I thought I’d done something terribly wrong. But then I realised that they were actually collages of photos I’d taken at the exhibit – a public place – and not of copyrighted images I’d found online. And well, since I wasn’t around in 1885, I reckoned it was pretty clear that I wasn’t trying to take credit for the photos. But it does seem like a bit of a grey area. What do you think? Both about the annoying Facebook tagging issue and the copyright confusion.

on clients and friends…

So this was my today, spent with these three lovely people…

I had an appointment with María Paz to help her revive the blog I’d made for her a couple of years ago, and integrate that with new social media accounts I’d created. Our appointment was for 11 o’clock, and I thought we’d finish in time for me to get to the gym, shower and have a quick bite to eat before my Spanish/English class with Pablo at 3.00. Well, due to this and that María Paz didn’t show up until 1.40 which kind of put the kibosh on, well, everything. Though I did manage a quick shower before she finally arrived. And then made a sandwich after Pablo got here. A part of our class involved helping Pablo get connected with London people on Twitter for an upcoming trip there, and it ended just fifteen minutes before my “proper” English class with my friend Agustín’s son (also Agustín)… and whew! Not the day I’d expected or planned but lots of cool stuff happened, and I was inspired in a many ways. But the really cool thing is how my personal life is also becoming my professional life, which is turning into what I’d want to do anyhow when I get out of bed in the morning. So it’s sometimes hard to tell when I’m working and when I’m not.

After all this it was suddenly 8pm and I remembered that another Twitter pal from Madrid was in town for a bloggers convention, and so I called Graeme and he met Nog and I for a lovely dinner out at one of my favourite places, La Azotea. And I actually got to eat! Which doesn’t often happen on my tapas tours, so that was a nice change.

And now I’m home and thinking about all the social media stuff I need to get done in the morning before I go to the gym and then prepare for an impromptu gourmet tapas tour that was booked by a group of Dutch people who happened to run into the group of Dutch guys that had been on my tour the day before… yeah, I know!

I really love how some friends have become clients, and how clients and online acquaintences end up becoming my friends. It’s all mixed up and it’s great. Just how I like it. And now to bed! There’s a little black cat waiting for me…

Here I go again…

I finally got an invite to join Google+ yesterday and since then I have been wasting spending all kinds of time figuring out what it can do. So far it seems like a much more elegant version of Facebook, and I can see it becoming very popular. There are nice options available so each post can go totally public, to all your contacts (all circles) or just selected ones. And I love that I can edit my posts after they’ve been published.

A bit annoyed with myself for being a bit duh and signing up using my Google profile name “azahar sevilla”, instead of my real name. Looks like everyone is using their real name, but oh well.  As I’m mostly interested in using this for business stuff then using my brand is probably okay. Or it’ll have to be because it looks like I’m not allowed to change it (oops)! Besides, most people know me as azahar by now. Perhaps I should legally change it…?

This is a link to my G+ profile

Who else out there is now using Google+?

My first real new part-time freelance job since starting off this season as a social media manager … got the phone call yesterday afternoon. And I did that whole jumping up and down thing. It really was very exciting.

I’ve actually had three meetings this past week with tapas bars/restaurants that I feel could use my services, and I showed up with everything set up and with my presentation totally organised and – I hope – interesting. Made me realise more than ever that I’ve got to get myself an iPad…

But otherwise and that, I have a new job! And the great thing is that this job didn’t actually exist until I created it, packaged it up in an interesting way, and then went out and convinced a few people they really needed and wanted this, and that I was the best person to set it up and maintain it for them. This is a really big step for me. I mean, sure, it’s just part-time, but with a few more of these I could maybe end up being something resembling full-time.. maybe.
