our flag means death

One of the “good” things about being OLD is that I barely remember anything anymore. How is this good you ask? Well a few months ago I watched Our Flag Means Death and totally loved it. Funny, silly, charming… and a brooding Taika Waititi (as Blackbeard) in head to toe leather. And so after being disappointed and/or annoyed after watching a couple of the latest streaming Trending Hits I decided to try OFMD again. And while there were certainly bits of it that I remembered there was also plenty I had forgotten, so it was almost like watching it anew. If you haven’t seen it I can’t recommend it enough. Absolute joy. Great soundtrack too.

It all started very simply with me going over to Movistar to ask about changing companies, since my contract with Vodafone finished at the beginning of this month. I’d been paying off the old iPhone (foolishly I didn’t buy it outright two years ago) and aside from that I had a separate TV contract with Digital+. But since Digital+ and Movistar had recently merged, I thought it was time to sort this out to my advantage. Spent an hour with a very helpful salesperson at Movistar, and I would’ve probably gone with them, but a couple of things niggled. First there was no fibre optic available in my street, which meant TV service wouldn’t be optimum. And then I was told the megas I’d be getting. To be honest, I’d never concerned myself with this before. It didn’t actually matter that for my phone I’d be getting 3 megas instead of the 5 I had with Vodafone since I barely use more than 1 per month. But then I was told about the internet megas… only 10 max with Movistar, and – the guy was honest – I’d probably not get more than 8, depending on where I was situated. He asked if I’d ever done a speed check to see what I was getting at home now and I said … duh? So I went home and followed his instructions. Holy crap – I was getting close to 11! Whatever that means! Except it’s obviously more than 8. So I went back and showed the guy my findings and – bless him – he said he honestly couldn’t recommend me switching companies until fibre optic became available in my street. Seriously, how often does that happen?

So a couple of days later I was passing the Vodafone store and thought I’d pop in and see about my old contract… and I found out that Vodafone now has TV! Also that they have fibre optics available in my street. An hour later I walked out with a great deal. Internet, TV, etc for much less than I’ve been paying. PLUS I get 6 months free Netflix, an extra 3G card for my iPad for a year… whatevs. If it’s free I’ll take it. So I cancelled my present Netflix (one month free and then pay) and will instead pay the fee via Vodafone if, in six months, it seems like something I want to keep…

morcilla proofing

And so yesterday a couple of chaps from Vodafone came over to set everything up. It was only then that I started to question my decision. It turned out that EVERYTHING had to be next to the television. So the very clever set up I came up with last year to prevent Morcilla from EATING ALL THE CORDS was suddenly obsolete. Here you see some very quick & dirty Morcilla-proofing I did so I could go out to work last night. Will obviously have to come up with something else soon… but what?

netflixAt long fucking last Netflix has finally arrived in Spain. I think it was yesterday. So of course I signed up for the free first month trial. And that’s when things predictably went pear shaped. As in, how do I access it from my brand new SmartTV when I can’t find it anywhere on there? After looking everywhere I contacted the Netflix helpline thingy and had an option of a chat or a phone call. I chose the chat and within seconds Pau (possibly not real name? 😉 ) came online to chat with me.

Well, I am now in love with Pau, whoever he (or she) may be. Pau stayed on the chat with me for about half an hour while we tried things out, first trying the most obvious solutions and then digging deeper. At one point I had to call the LG helpline (while Pau patiently waited for me) and I was told that my BRAND NEW SMART TV that was manufactured in June and bought by me in July did not support the Netflix app. What the fucking fuck?? To be fair, the LG helpline guy (he had a lovely voice) seemed just as perplexed as me, and said he couldn’t understand why this app wasn’t possible. So okay fine, but Pau was waiting and I had to go.

When I told Pau this was crazy and I didn’t sign up to Netflix to watch films on my iPhone or laptop, he remained calm and asked if I had any other device options such as Wii, PS3, or 4, or Blu Ray players. Bingo! Hello somewhat aged Sony BluRay player! I had my doubts at first because no Netflix was showing up (and other apps like YouTube had been cancelled over the years). But then I did an update and lo & behold… there was Netflix! Yay! So I signed in and there it was! Pau, bless him, said he would hang on until I tested it, so that I could actually start watching something, and so I tried it out and, yep, no problem. Well, okay, it’s a bit of a pain to have to switch to HDMI2, turn on the BluRay and wait for all that to sort itself out, but you know… it’s what I’ve got.

So hey, what did you do today?

Here is Morcilla, prettily reflected in the screen of my new TV…

Problem? Well, yes. Morcilla has become enthralled by the cute cat “inside the TV screen” and does whatever she can to make contact, including SCRATCHING THE HELL OUT OF THE SURFACE. You know, to get inside, so she can play with this obviously attractive other being. Seriously, Morcilla sits up on her haunches and commences trying to scratch through to the other side of the screen. So far I haven’t seen any damage to the screen… I think she can’t really get a grip with the pointy-scratchy tips of her claws, so she ends up just (just???) dragging the curved edges of her claws along the screen. This morning I decided to try putting a throw over the TV when it’s not in use. We’ll see if that helps. Honesty. I mean, cheap 12€ IKEA curtains are one thing, but a 700€ TV???
