Things are getting back to “normal” here again after the annual upheaval that is Semana Santa. Part of me really likes how everybody’s routines are totally disrupted during this week, even if they don’t attend any of the processions. I know that if I didn’t live next to the cathedral I wouldn’t bother going out to see them (though I did the first few years I lived here) and I know I would miss that. Sure, it’s a week of unpaid holidays and getting out my front door can sometimes be difficult because of the crowds, but it’s also kind of refreshing to have things shaken up a bit. As usual, this year all of my students (all = 4) cancelled classes for the week, but I ended up working more than ever…

Today’s Photohunt theme is “sweet”.
It is Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Sevilla and the streets are full of processions depicting the Christ and Virgin during the various stages of The Passion … and walking in front of these pasos are the nazarenos (often mistaken for KKK members by visiting USians). But far from being sinister, nazarenos often hand out sweets to the children and help them collect colourful balls of wax from the variously coloured candles carried by the different cofradios.
Above you can see a selection of sweets made in the shape of nazarenos, as well as nazareno-shaped cardboard containers that have sweets inside. Weird you say? Well, you’ll get no argument from me on that one. My favourites are the multi-coloured “gummy-bear” nazarenos. They just seem so delightfully wrong somehow.ย ๐

You truly know what tastes good, and you can often pick out the best dish at a restaurant. You don’t fall for food trends. You stick with what’s been food for a long time! |
