feria 2022 (1)

Stopped by opening day of the Feria de Abril yesterday to take some pics as rain was being forecast for the rest of the week and OMG. First of all it was about 30º without shade or breeze, and the number of people was, well frankly, alarming. Apparently Sunday set a new record for attendance, which is saying something about an event that is almost always packed out. I didn’t linger.

I took a few photos and then quickly lost interest. I don’t know if it was Covid burnout but I no longer saw the Feria goers simply as happy folk out for a good time. Instead all I could think of was how reckless – and yes selfish – they were all being. Totally crammed into airless casetas, no masks in sight, with barely any space to move, shouting and laughing into each other’s faces, hugging and kissing and dancing. Happy to be enjoying things being “normal” again after having missed their beloved Feria for two years. It was like being at a Covid Deniers convention.

To be honest, I lost interest in Feria years ago but still enjoyed spending one afternoon there taking photos of the colourful dresses and beautiful horses, then stopping somewhere for a quick manzanilla before heading home again. But yesterday it felt like there was a kind of desperation in all the merry making. And worse, I saw the horses suffering under the blazing sun, being forced to keep making the rounds either so their riders could show off or the carriage drivers could make money overcharging tourists. More than once I saw a horse balk and refuse to go any further, then be forced to keep going. It all made me quite sad and after a very short time I was ready to leave. So who knows, maybe that’s it for me and that was my last Feria.

mask mandate ends

Honestly, if not for masks still being required on ALL public transport I would be so fucked. As it is, I will keep wearing a mask when I go out, and inside all shops and restaurants. You have to wonder about the timing… I mean, immediately after Semana Santa when thousands upon thousands of maskless people were crammed together for an entire week. And then we have Feria coming up in two weeks, when thousands of maskless people will be crammed into small tents for another week. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to at least wait 2-3 weeks after Semana Santa for the case results to come in? Oh right, not testing any more. And no more mention of Covid anywhere in the media. Fuck.

countdown to disaster

It was announced today that as of April 20th the public indoor mask mandate will be lifted nationwide. I’ve been dreading this ever since they floated this awful idea a couple of months ago. Aside from the risk it places on my health (and frankly everyone else’s if people were honest with themselves) it’s also going to drastically affect my business and, hence, my life. At the moment I am still limiting my tours so as to also limit possible exposure to Covid. Which, by the way, IS NOT OVER. But after the 20th I cannot see myself wanting to be at close quarters for four hours with people who have travelled unmasked from the US or UK on a flight full of other maskless selfish assholes. It also means that my future travel plans (mostly work related) will have to be cancelled because public transport will have become too risky.

A case in point, a friend of mine recently returned from Spain to London and decided to take a rapid test when he got home. Positive for Covid. Without symptoms. And he remained positive for 11 days, during which he cancelled another trip he had planned. In fact, he stayed home for the entire 11 days until he tested negative. He said it really hit home how, if he had travelled, he could have been a super spreader and infected many, many other people. Not to mention that with each infection (with symptoms or otherwise) the virus gets more chances to mutate.

And before people jump all over me saying I’m overreacting or whatever… kindly just fuck off. It’s my life. Though not, as someone pointed out in a very pointy manner today, my choice. It is not MY choice to watch my livelihood go down the drain because of political bullshit I have no control over. Because this is ONLY a political decision. FYI? Hospitalisations and deaths are up in Andalucía, while they keep telling us that new cases are going down. Well, since they have stopped testing and PCRs are now limited to “vulnerable” people, of course the fucking number of recorded cases are going down. Because they are simply not being recorded. Hard to hide those deaths though. In fact, last week we had more new Covid cases in Andalucía than in all of China, which as you know is in a serious lockdown situation. Again. And of course both the UK and US are total political shitshows with hospitals being swamped by Covid patients.

So my “choice” is to either go against my better judgement and pretend Covid is over just like far too many people are doing, or to continue being myself, and true to myself, and a responsible and caring member of this society. This “choice” is shit, it’s a terrible place to find myself, and it’s stressful as fuck. Because I honestly don’t know how I am going to live now. And all because people think wearing a mask during an ongoing global pandemic with an AIRBORNE VIRUS is too fucking hard for them. To all you Covid Deniers who are so keen to get your “old normal” back that you are willing to throw everyone else under the bus as long as you get to do what you want… fuck you.

two years on…

2 years on

I remember back in March 2020, exactly two years ago today, being all worried that this new pandemic lockdown thing might last more than a few weeks. Ha. And then of course on last year’s lockdown anniversary we were all looking forward to the vaccine. Since then so much has changed while much has stayed the same.

I’m still living a kind of “part time” life, not going out a lot, not travelling, etc. Much of that has to do with barely working these days, so there’s no money for these things, but some of it is also me still being extra careful. I look ahead with dismay that China is locking down cities with the same numbers of new daily Covid cases countrywide as we are experiencing just in Andalucía (approx 3000), meanwhile Spain’s government is talking about removing all preventative measures after Semana Santa. Something is not right. Why is the response to the latest omicron variant being taken seriously in China and Hong Kong and not even being mentioned in the news here any more? I fear a very nasty “surprise” lies ahead.

Meanwhile I’m so tired of people being “tired of Covid” as if that is enough to make it disappear. It wears me down, it makes me all kinds of sad and want to just give up. The astounding selfishness I’ve seen from people who are only being inconvenienced in their otherwise comfortable lives is so demoralising. I shudder to think what they would do if they ever suffered an actual hardship. There is at least one more year of this fucker, as a serious threat to our lives and to those around us. Deny it all you want. Cherry pick news articles that back up what you want to be true. But please be aware that you are not only risking your own lives. The rest of us live here too.  ✌️

excessive?

excessive

Here is the weekly Wednesday antigen test. Once again looking good. But today someone told me that doing a test every week when I have no symptoms seemed excessive since there is no protocol in place for doing so. What do you think? I think most “official” protocols are politically-based, rather than science-based. I also think that taking a weekly test isn’t just about me feeling safer, it’s also about being responsible, for my clients and also for my flat mate, now that I am sharing my home again. And now that the price of a test has been government regulated to just under 3€ it’s not exactly a financial issue, and it only takes 15 minutes.

My feeling is that people so desperately wanting to get back to “normal” haven’t yet grasped the fact that that ship has sailed, and that “living with Covid” means that many things that were normal before are going to have to change and will probably be changed forever. I’m okay with that. Why wouldn’t I be? How about you?
