Look what came today! Been looking forward to this, the companion book to my friend Sarah Jane Evans MW‘s The Wines of Norther Spain. I even get a nice mention for advising Sarah Jane (ever so slightly) about Sevilla wines, still very much unheard of, even here. Excellent timing to help with research I’m presently doing for a couple of Bitesize Sevilla articles as well as an upcoming travel piece for Decanter.

Things are hopping down here in the south. As Sarah Jane says in her book, if she had written the chapter on Andaculía ten years ago it would have been very different. Exciting times. Also nice to see so many people I’ve come to know over the years mentioned in the book. Worth taking a look.

ivantxu espacio bistronomico, la carmela, restaurants, sevilla

This week chef Iván Valera celebrated the 10th anniversary of his renowned Ivantxu Espacio Bistronómico and I was invited to the party. Normally I don’t go to evening events, especially food related ones, because they always start late and frankly I don’t want to eat at 10.00 pm. BUT… this was Iván and so I really wanted to go. It’s weird to think that I only met Iván just over a year ago, when Reyes Morales and I went to check out recently opened Augurio. I saw him come in and sit down at the far end of the restaurant, clearly waiting for a friend. I recognised him from Instagram. Later on, after a couple of wines or three, I felt emboldened enough to not only go and introduce myself but also shamelessly ask if I could take a photo of what they were eating. Poor Carmen (co-owner of Augurio) was aghast as he was clearly a VIP client but Iván looked up and said “I KNOW WHO YOU ARE”… and we’ve been friends ever since.

Turned out that he was just about to open his new La Carmela restaurant, adjacent to Ivantxu, so Reyes and I went to try it in July and… everything was fabulous. It really was. Plus the space was fun and brightly decorated and we got to sit in front of the open kitchen. A couple of months later we finally tried Ivantxu, which I had never been to because (stupidly on my part) the name “Espacio Bistronómico” had put me off. I thought it would be yet another over-priced uninspired gastrobar, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. It’s safe to say that Iván is one of the best chefs in the city.

Anyhow, back to the party. The place was packed but I was able to score a table away from the crowd (one of the few perks of being on crutches). In fact, it was my favourite table, in front of the open kitchen. So I got to watch Iván and his team meticulously prepping all the delicious bites we were served and towards the end of the evening I realised he wasn’t even able to enjoy his own party. But he was happy with the turnout and I got to meet his wife and see a few old friends… really glad I went.

Julio Moreno & Manuel Salinero

The wonderful Julio Moreno has stepped down as president of the Academia Sevillana de Gastronomía y Turismo (of which I became a proud member in June 2023) and super-foodie Manuel Salinero is stepping up. Today the Academy held a tribute luncheon for Julio at Ispal with most of the academy members showing up (no small feat, it’s like herding cats!) as well as some special guests from the gastronomy and tourism scene here.

We enjoyed a fabulous sevillano meal with modern touches, the wine flowed, speeches were given, gifts relayed (my favourite was the apron we all signed for Julio)… the outpouring of honest love and respect from everyone present was truly moving to witness. Anyhow, Julio isn’t going far. He is now officially recognised as Presidente de Honor, though we are calling him the presidente eterno, and he will still be with us at activities and events. But now he has more time to enjoy his other pastimes too and only has to see us when he wants to. What a guy. Big love.

casa morales, medalla de la ciudad, reyes morales, sevilla

So pleased to see my friend Reyes Morales receive the Medalla de la Ciudad 2025. Upon receiving this recognition for her iconic tavern and her place in the history of Sevilla she said it was also a tribute to those who are no longer with us.

“It moves me to talk about this because my family lived through a civil war, a postwar period, very difficult years… And now it’s my turn to collect this medal, it’s an immense honour. For them. For those up above.”
