Also known as I HAVE TO GET MY HAIR CUT NOW day. Ever since my trusted hairdresser of more than 20 years Joaquín Curiel died of Covid in 2020 it’s been a bit hit and miss in the hair cutting department. I did find one guy (who is now Peter’s regular guy) but I could never just pop in with him because he’s always super busy (P sensibly makes an appt). With Joaquín I could always just pop my head in and he’d say “hey no problem, take a seat” or else “maybe try tomorrow?”. Because he knew what I wanted. Which was just to get my hair spritzed down, a quick cut and then send me off home with wet hair.

I have since found a place in my street, not even a minute away, so they are perfect. Except it’s even more hit and miss with them when I am on my way home and just want to pop in (has to be on my way home because MY HAIR WILL BE WET). So today I decided to not leave things to chance and booked an appt for early afternoon. For one mad moment I wondered if I should also book a pedicure (about two doors down from the hairdresser) but then remembered the last time I did that. It was just too much PAMPERING all at once, even with the ten-minute haircut. Anyhow, next time you see me my same old bob, same one I’ve had for over 40 years, will be tidied up and back to just below chin length. Phew!

After doing over 6,000 hobbles on Monday I decided it was time for some self care. Plus I really needed a haircut! So yesterday I booked appointments for a pedicure, followed by hair (both places are just a couple of doors apart and just down the street from my house) and made the day all about meeeeeeee. It felt nice not to have to be anywhere, get in a taxi or on a bus. I had time to do a chair kickboxing class and also make some fab espinacas con garbanzos before heading out, so when I got back lunch was ready. A good day.

I never plan haircuts. I just wake up one day and realise that I REALLY need a haircut!!! Today was such a day. Then I had a look at my feet and saw the pedicure I had done in May (first professional one since 2018!) was also getting a bit shabby so what the heck. I decided to book both appointments for today since I am ON STAYCATION and both the hairdresser and the nail place are just a few doors down from my house. Easy!

I remember thinking back in 2018 that the pedis were going to become a regular thing, but then this and that happened, then Covid… but then in May I couldn’t deny that my feet were in pretty bad shape. So I tried the place in my street because I saw the girls were wearing masks (surgical, but better than nothing). That poor woman! The workout she had trying to get my feet even half-way back to OK. It was easier on her this time – better results too – and I also brought my own Essie polish (appropriately named TOO TOO HOT) because last time I ended up with a too-dark red. Isn’t this interesting?

Then I popped two doors down to the hairdresser. They know me by now. Just spritz my hair, cut off “dos dedos” with a “longer at the front” incline, and then I’m outta there, wet hair and all. I get charged for a full “cut & styling” but that’s fine. All I want is my hair cut.

So now I’m all set for summer. Shorter hair, perfect red happy toes, and really just a good feeling about having done this. Making time for a bit of self care is important, even if you think you can’t afford it. Oh, and I also did a full-on (chair) cardio & strength workout before I went out. Yay me!

Got a haircut this week! Since my peluquero of more than 20 years sadly died of Covid in early 2021 it’s been tricky because I am an annoying drop in client and Joaquín never minded that. All I ever want is a quick wash and trim (dos dedos), no blow dry or styling, it takes less than 15 mins. BUT I have to be on my way home (wet hair) and so I drop in when the timing is just right. These days it usually takes a couple of tries, and this week I lucked out.

Looks like I am one trim (maybe two) away from being all natural, which unfortunately isn’t the stunning pure silvery-white I’d been hoping for… apparently I am “dove grey” with white at the temples. I like the white bits but hope it doesn’t make me look like Grandpa Munster! But it actually feels good not to be bothered about hair colour anymore. Just one less thing, you know?

The other day on a tapas tour one of my guests had her hair pulled back and secured with one of these doohickeys. It’s actually meant for ponytails but, like me, Martha has very fine hair so she had twirled hers into a little knot and then kept it in place with this. She even did a demonstration at one of our bars, showing me how easy they are to use. SOLD. As soon as I got home I found them on Amazon and placed an order, which arrived the next day.

Can I tell you? It works! For the past practically forever I’ve been using a scrunchy made from braided shoelaces (actually cuter than it sounds), because normal hair clips and slides just slip off. But these guys. Easy peasy. A bit off-putting how it looks like ALIEN when you open it up, but it slides so gently over my little bun and after that I don’t even notice it’s there. Keeps my hair in place and, well, it’s also cute.

Can’t wait till I am finally ALL WHITE as there is also a pale gray alien in the packet and that’s going to totally tone in.
