dream house

This is one of several of my dream houses here, where I would imagine some day having a top floor apartment. I mean, it probably never would have happened anyhow, but now that this landmark building houses tourist apartments, hope is dashed forever.

caturday oct 19 2024

First time I’ve seen the girls cuddling again after their “falling out” over a year ago. Well, cuddling. Morcilla is that cute bump under the chair cover 😅

caturday october 12 2024

With the threat of massive rain storms this weekend I took advantage of a somewhat sunny Thursday to get ALL the laundry done and also, as it’s getting a bit chilly, to air out the duvet in the sun up on the roof (just in case). When it came back in I laid it out on the clothes rack and Morcilla has decided this is her new favourite spot. Until it ends up on my bed.

cold showers

A few weeks ago the hot water pressure started acting up. Sometimes it was there, other times nothing, although the cold water was working fine. Landlord had someone come over from his insurance company and – of course! – just before he showed up the hot water kicked back in again. So this guy reported back that there was no problem, even though I had told him it was an intermittent thing, and he actually told me (but not the landlord) that the water heater was probably blocked, so nothing was done. Spent the next couple of weeks fiddling with the cold-hot water taps to get the hot water to kick in, which usually happened.

Until last Saturday when it didn’t. And that was it, we’ve had NO hot water since Saturday morning. Not wanting to bother the landlord over the weekend I sent a text message hoping they could do something first thing Monday morning, which they did. Nice guy who came over late last night told me the water heater definitely needs to be replaced, called the landlord, and apparently no problem. Except now I have no idea when we are going to get a replacement water heater. Might be today (doubtful), more likely tomorrow or even whenever.

Meanwhile, we’ve been taking COLD SHOWERS since Saturday and – can I tell you? – it’s really really unpleasant and even painful. I’m actually considering booking a hotel or asking a neighbour if I can come over and shower. I mean, I could call the Corte Inglés right now and pay for a new water heater to be delivered and installed within 24 hours, but I already did that when the washing machine died earlier this year, and I really don’t think it’s up to me to replace these basic appliances. This is very frustrating.

5 kilos

I am happy to report that I am leaving the month of September carrying 5 fewer kilos than when it started. It’s more impressive (to me) if I think about it as no longer lugging around this 5 kg sack of potatoes (just over two Morcillas doesn’t have the same impact). I know it’s still tip of the iceberg and also that I’ve been here before, many times, but let’s see if it sticks this time.

If what sticks, you ask? Well that’s what I’m not sure about. I mean, I got a bit of a “head start” when I got sick a few weeks ago and could barely eat anything for a week. Then when I was getting back to feeling normalish I just tried eating a bit differently, at different times. And of course keeping up with my chair workouts, as well as trying to get out for a daily hobble (my god I miss walking!). The good thing is that this new “whatever it is” hasn’t actually changed how I live. I can still go out to my tapas bars, enjoy meals out and Beer O’clock, have fun cooking at home etc, which I think is going to help make it sustainable because this isn’t a DIET, more a bit of a lifestyle tweak, if that makes sense.

Anyhow, it’s also a learning process as I figure out what feels best. Weight loss is just a part of the changes being made, and losing 5 kilos a month is maybe a bit too optimistic, but I’ll check in again at the end of October and let you know how it’s all going. Maybe by then I’ll know what I’m doing!
