One of my favourite things to do during Semana Santa is go out and get photos of the ladies dressed in their beautiful black lace mantillas on Jueves and Viernes Santo. But of course this year I reckoned nobody would be going out in this WEATHER dressed up… then I saw this pic on local author Julio Muñoz’s Instagram. Gotta admire her determination.

The first cancellation of Semana Santa in 2020 came as a shock to everyone, including myself, because it seemed unimaginable. The following year as we waited for the first Covid vaccine rollout it was cancelled once again and this was the very poignant official poster that year. It could also serve for this year with the entire week’s weather forecast not only rainy but also with storm and wind warnings. That hasn’t stopped a few processions from going out… it’s like living in denial has become a thing. I don’t understand why they would risk damage to these works of art. Even the archbishop has said to the hermandades who were not able to go out this year that THIS should be considered their penance. Whatevs. I’m staying home for the rest of the week.

First visit since our first meet up just before Covid lockdown, after knowing each other “virtually” for years, Rogene (aka Maribel) and Phil are back in town. We had a couple of great food and wine filled afternoons, a “Tribeca Tapas Tour” and then Phil’s birthday lunch at Barra Baja. Good times!

It’s the first Semana Santa I can remember where it is expected to rain EVERY DAY. Today it was about 50/50 and the skies were almost pure white. Kind of pretty in its own way. 🤍
