antigua abaceria de san lorenzo, san lorenzo, sevilla, tapas, tapas bars

Every year Ramón and Mari Carmen of the Antigua Abacería de San Lorenzo host their San Lorenzo day celebration on August 10th, in honour of the patron saint of cooks and chefs, and namesake of both their barrio and bar. The first time I attended this event was five years ago and I’ve gone every year since then.

The martyr San Lorenzo was put to a slow and painful death on top of a large gridiron with live coals beneath it and, the legend concludes that, after enduring the pain for a very long time he made his famous cheerful remark, “I’m well done. Turn me over!”. And so, as always, different varieties of grilled flesh were on offer during the day at the Abacería, along with a typical white wine punch from Huelva called ponche alosnero. We also got to try cured pork tongue and tiny nécora crabs. Good times.

So apparently we have an Orange Alert situation here. This was taken at 6.30 in the evening while I was waiting for clients. 44º. And it’s going to get even hotter….

blood moon, sevilla

Is it me or does it seem like there have been countless opportunities over the past few years to see THE this-or-that moon/sun event of our lifetime? Anyhow, there was another one last night, so Peter and I popped over to what I thought would be a great viewing point – the rooftop terrace on the Hotel Inglaterra. As you can see, it’s a great view from up there. But by the time we got to see the moon it had become small and pale, barely visible to the eye.

Turns out you have to catch these babies on the rise, and the closer to the horizon the better. Didn’t hang around for the eclipse as it probably wouldn’t have looked much different. Well, better luck next time…

Very pale blood moon with Mars shining bright on the right.
