What the heck. It’s still January! So Mar and I went out to celebrate my on-going birthday, this time at El Cuelgue, a new spot that just opened up a couple of months ago. We were the first to arrive and the last to leave (even chef Santi left before we did!) and had a fun and delicious time.

Lucy’s (@sparkybakewell) birthday is the day after mine and we like to get together to celebrate that because, why the hell not? Well today was the day so we met up at Triana market with no plan in mind, but Lucy kept saying “I just want some really nice fizz”… so while we were walking to our first possible destination we passed by El Mercader de Triana and I said “Victor has gotta have some fizz in there” and in we went. And sure enough he did. The idea was just to have a glass there and move on, but in the end one thing led to another we had our whole lunch there. And it was fabulous. I LOVE Birthday Week. Thanks Lucy!

I cannot begin to tell you how happy this made me. This place clearly didn’t realise they were dealing with a consumer rights lawyer… hahaha. Love it. So he was not only awarded the 7€ refund, the restaurant also had to pay for his legal fees. Fuck around and find out bitches! I feel so vindicated… Shawn of The Bread. We need more of this.
For the record, in Andalucía it is illegal to charge for any food item brought to the table without it having been ordered first (olives, bread, etc), and all food items have to be listed (with prices) on the menu. It is also illegal to charge for any non-food item ie “service”.
Also for the record… I seldom want bread in a tapas bar because 1) it’s usually not great bread and 2) it’s not necessary and just fills me up so I can’t enjoy other things. BUT when I want bread I am happy to order and pay for it. It’s this sneaky ILLEGAL “admission fee” charge that I refuse to pay.

It’s December and look what I’ve got! Isn’t this FABULOUS? I’ve long been a fan of Alfredo’s “city façades” of various classic bars and other iconic buildings in Sevilla, a collection he began during the Covid lockdown, and now he has created this wonderful 2023 calendar. A perfect Christmas present for Sevilla lovers, don’t you think? Not only do you get a different bar each month, there are dates mentioned for special Sevilla holidays and birthdays of well-known sevillanos (though I noticed mine was missing).
