My Sevilla Tapas Tours are never the same. People are always different and bring their own unique qualities to the group dynamic, food preferences vary, travel and life experiences are shared… and every now and then there are peacocks. These guys were spotted between tapas bars along the outer walls of the Alcázar palace gardens.

During the night my annual Christmas Cold arrived and I have spent the day inside shivering and sniffling. But now duty calls and I’m heading out to meet five friends to take them on a nice tapeo. Tomorrow is a day off!

beef book
Every now and then on one of my Sevilla Tapas Tours I not only have a great time showing people around the best tapas bars in town, but I also make a friend. And in this case I actually made two friends! I met Kyran and Claire at the end of October when I picked them up at their hotel … nice touch was when they invited me for a glass of cava at the lovely patio bar. And from there it was a fun night out with two very adventurous eaters who also love cooking and drinking sherry. So I was delighted when they stayed in touch later on via Twitter and Instagram, and I was totally floored the other day when they sent me this amazing Christmas pressie! The Irish Beef Book. Well.

I like to think I’m a good cook (because I am!) but I have never really mastered the art of cooking meat at home, other than slow-cooked recipes. And indeed this fabulous book by Pat Whelan and Katy McGuinness has an entire chapter entitled “long & slow” but it also goes beyond meat dishes and includes great side dishes including an amazing looking recipe for individual Yorksire puddings, which I can’t wait to try. I think Mr Anchovy and WeeRascal would also do well with this book. It also turns out that most recipes are adaptable (not a lotta beef here in Spain) so I won’t have to ask Kyran and Claire to send me an Irish cow…

Thank you lovelies! See you again in the spring!

The POWER OF TWITTER strikes again! A couple of months ago my friend José Pizarro sent me a Twitter message asking if I could give his friend Sarah some help on her trip here, saying he knew I’d look after her well. And so I got in touch with Sarah by email and we made some plans, including meeting up on the evening she and her husband Matthew arrived (Friday) to take them on a tapas tour. And what a great time it was. We went to three bars and, as Sarah is doing research for a book on marmalage, I think it was especially fun for her to get a recipe from chef José María at our last stop La Azotea. So once again my life has been enriched by simply hanging out on Twitter and continuing to connect with people. Love it.

Usually during a Flamenco & Tapas Tour I end up taking about a hundred photos and maybe – just maybe! – one turns out. This time I was quite pleased to find three that I liked (click on collage to enlarge). Love my job. 🙂

hollowlegs
Just spent a lovely afternoon with Lizzie @hollowlegs and James @pizzapilgrims who arrived in Sevilla from London this morning and were clearly in need of some tapas. Specifically some jamón Ibérico and manzanilla sherry… for starters. I’ve been “twitter pals” with Lizzie for awhile, so I was very happy to finally meet her in person and give her and James an introduction to Sevilla and tapas. And hey – I had a great time too! Love meeting new people, especially those who are interested in the whole food and culture thing, knowing that one doesn’t exist without the other.

I wasn’t sure how the afternoon would go, but starting off with excellent jamón is always a good move. In the end we went to four tapas bars – three traditional and one modern – and I lurched home around 5 o’clock after leaving Lizzie and James at the Mushrooms to enjoy the views from above, and possibly another drink. Man, I love twitter.
