I love Sevilla. For four days at Flores Jamón & Vinos the offer is a large plate of jamón Ibérico de bellota with two glasses of fino for 15€ – a crazy good price. And if I check in on either 4 Square of Yelp (and I will!) I’ll get a half-bottle of Osborne fino. Yep, I’ll be there. 🙂
But not until tomorrow. Gotta work tonight.

So there I was enjoying my morning coffee in bed with the cats (though actually at work, checking emails and social media stuff on the iPad) and I remembered that it was the Copa Jerez (Sherry Cup), where chefs chosen from seven different countries would meet in Jerez and create special dishes to pair with a particular sherries. And I thought… well, why not? Well, other than I didn’t have an invitation and my friend Annie thought it was too late for her to get one for me. Details, details. I decided to hop on the next train and gatecrash the event. Which turned out to be no problem at all, and anyhow, had I planned to go earlier I would have got an invite. But I digress.
Annie drove in from Vejer and picked me up at the train station. From there we went off to the event, watched a bit of the judging, but for the most part partook of the sherry on offer from 15 bodegas, along with some wonderful jamón and cheese. The competition and various interviews were over by 2 o’clock and I was invited to join a lunch party at a lovely spot called Ajo Negro. Then caught the 6 o’clock train home, arriving just in time to get to pick up my tapas tour clients at our meeting point. Phew!
It was great to see old friends again and catch up, and I also made some good contacts for future sherry education. So it was a good thing I didn’t just stay in bed with my coffee!

Monday and Tuesday this week were happily spent at Andalucía Sabor, a fine food exhibition featuring Andalusian products and chefs along with cooking demonstrations and food and wine tastings. It was great fun but the best part was finally meeting cookbook author Janet Mendel in person, who came up from the south coast for the event. More on Andalucía Sabor (and Janet) later on azahar’s Sevilla blog, but for now here are few pics.

I was crushed to find out that I’d missed my chance to sign up for the first Sherry Master course being offered by Gonzalez-Byass in Jerez earlier this month. Well, I knew that I wouldn’t exactly be a true sherry master after a two-day event, but it would have helped with my education in order to get my Introduction to Sherry tours going, and it would have also been a lot of fun.
Then I came across this recently-published book that I’d been hearing about on Twitter by Peter LIem and Jesus Barquín called Sherry, Manzanilla & Montilla. So I read a couple of reviews and decided to order it, thinking it would be a good place to begin a bit of “formal training” in terms of learning more about the world of sherry. It arrived yesterday. Now I just have to find time to read it! Looks like I’m going to be crazy busy most of this month.
Like now. Just home from a morning Market & Tapas Tour and a bit later will be going out on an evening Sevilla Tapas Tour. I think I need to clone myself…
