The last time I was in Jerez for Vinoble in 2024 I stayed at two different hotels as I had won a night at 5 star GL Casa Palacio María Luisa in a raffle draw but of course couldn’t afford to stay another night there on my own dime. Then I happened upon Boutique Palacio Corredera and booked them (actually for the first night) and, if I’m totally honest, I actually preferred that stay over the luxe experience. So this time, going back for two nights again, I knew this was where I wanted to stay. Only problem? Their standard double rooms only come with double beds and, while Peter and I are good friends and all, separate beds are preferable. But we decided that, for the price, we could spend a couple of nights bunking down in the same bed.

Turns out we didn’t have to worry because they also have suites there and, as I had requested two beds and they had a suite available, we got an upgrade. And holy moly… what an upgrade! I can’t post vids here but you can see the instagram ones I made when we checked in (there are two because it was a duplex room and part 2 is for upstairs). If you look at the photo you can see the suite was actually the two top floors of the second building on the left. Wow.

The Muralla Room

Not only was the suite gorgeous (with our own private lift!) but the hotel is also so comfy. There’s a little coffee room where you can go any time of the day and help yourself to a coffee or some chilled water. And if you’re not lucky enough to have your own private terrace (which I only discovered off the upstairs bedroom on the second day) here’s also a lovely open air patio downstairs and several sitting rooms if you don’t want to be in your room. Cannot recommend this place enough

jerez hotels (1)

Had two very lovely and quite different hotel experiences while I was away in Jerez for Vinoble last week. Four star Hotel Boutique Palacio Corredera is about a ten-minute walk from the train station, so that made it a good first stop on day one. We were able to drop our bags and head directly to Vinoble, finally checking in properly after lunch. And there was a suprise! I had asked for two beds and they ended up giving us a “family suite” (number 18) with a sofa bed for Peter (for the same price as a standard double room). Check out the instagram video below… this suite was SPACIOUS. It even had two bathrooms. There were also several beautiful courtyards used as “common areas” with comfy chairs and sofas, and a small “courtesy” room where you could make yourself a cup of coffee or have a drink. Very well thought out and very friendly and helpful staff too. Breakfast wasn’t included (I never book hotel breakfasts, more on that below) so we went to one of several little nearby bars for our tostadas (the central market is also just around the corner with Manolo’s amazing churros).

I think this has become my new favourite place to stay in Jerez (that is within my budget). It has location and style and comfort going for it, and I really felt at home here.

Next day we checked in at grand lux 5 star Casa Palacio María Luisa, winner of the Best Boutique Hotel in Spain 2024 (World Travel Awards). You may wonder what the heck I was doing there. WELL… a couple of months ago I was invited to the opening of the rooftop bar at their sister hotel, 5 star GL Don Ramón in Sevilla. The first part was for press and they held a raffle for a free night at the hotel… and I won! But remembering that I would be going to Jerez for Vinoble I asked if I could swap hotels. Cheeky, but they said sure, that would be fine. We checked in just before lunch and, gotta admit, after all that extra space at the Corredera our beautiful premium room (number 9) felt a bit pokey in comparison, though it did have a lovely view of the garden and, for a freebie, I couldn’t really expect their María Luisa Suite (which is about the size of my apartment). It’s all about luxury here (a couple of days before arriving I was sent an email asking which toiletries I would like between three premium brands) and we had a lovely welcoming gift in the room of cookies, chocolates and a small bottle of cream sherry. Later in the afternoon while we were out they turned down the beds and left a cute fluffy teddy bear with a message (wasn’t sure if this was ours to take home so we left it).

There were also several attractive common rooms we could enjoy and of course their spectacular garden and cocktail bar. We had breakfast included which was served in a charming glass-covered terrace overlooking the garden, and I loved that it wasn’t buffet style (hate buffet breakfasts). The main reason I never ask for a hotel breakfast is simply because I never eat much in the morning and can’t justify the price when all I really want is coffee, maybe a glass of juice and some toast or a croissant. As you can imagine, the toast here was superb, as was the coffee, and so no complaints at all. The María Luisa also has an in-house restaurant, the aforementioned garden cocktail bar and will attend to your every need.

Both of these hotels will be mentioned in an upcoming travel article in Decanter – stay tuned! Also, sorry about the Insta links for the hotel vids but I’m not allowed to upload videos here anymore. When did WP change that?

more hotels

Yet another five-star hotel going up in the barrio, this time taking over yet another of our landmark buildings which, as you can see, used to be people’s homes. Some say that posh hotels are good business and better than holiday apartments as they provide employment, blah blah. To me this just makes them the lesser of two evils. I don’t know the history behind this building, though I do remember when people lived there. So not sure if they were forced out or what. The building next to it was turned into a hotel a few years ago and another five-star opened up the street last year. Sadly it’s looking like El Arenal is on its way to becoming a tourist ghetto like Santa Cruz is now.

azahar traducciones

So this is something I’ve been doing off and on for many years, when friends who have bars, restaurants, hotels or wineries have asked me to help them with translating their stuff into proper English (as opposed to google translate mashups). And over the years I’ve had to learn specific terms and vocabulary used in these fields – translating winery sites and articles has been especially interesting. And so this is a new project which I hope will help keep the wolf at bay. Also, it will be fun to do and will keep me connected with the people I already enjoy working with. Fingers crossed!

quimera rooftop event

Yes… ANOTHER event. Was kind of a crazy week that way. This time it was the inauguration of the new Quimera bar-restaurant on the rooftop of the Hotel Melia Sevilla. Pretty innit.

As well as the new rooftop area, the Meliá has recently undergone a major renovation of all its facilities, and although this was my first visit I was impressed by what I saw. We started with a tour of the main reception area and downstairs bar, which are very cleverly designed with “open frame” partitions that preserve the feeling of spaciousness, while giving a sense of intimacy to the different areas, followed by the various conference rooms, this obviously being a major target market for the hotel.

We then went upstairs to see a couple of the new rooms, a very nice standard double, and a distinctly luxurious suite with separate bedroom and living room, with a distinct “I could live there” feel to it. As a bonus there are great views of the back of the Plaza España, and also of the rooftop bar (which is on the lower roof above the reception area, not on the top roof), complete with swimming pool).

Finally to the new restaurant-bar Quimera itself, where we got to spend a pleasant couple of hours by the pool, sampling the food (actually pretty good) and wine, and listening to the entertainment – my new favourite crooner – Juanlu! By this time I was getting sufficiently tipsy to think that I could actually sing along and sound good! 😉

A fun evening, and as usual we met up with other friends that we often see at these things. Good times.
