So THIS was fun. On Thursday evening – after THE SCAN – I went to a jamón cutting masterclass, put on by Pando Restaurants as part of their new series of gastronomy classes. We started off with a bit of theory, but soon it was all hands on, with professional cortador Victor Fernández showing us how it’s done. And while we watch we got to taste the various cuts of jamón as they were passed around the room. Some brave souls even got up to try wielding the knife (with mixed results).
Although I know a fair bit about jamón, and also (in theory at least) about how to cut it, there is always something more to learn, and it was a lovely evening out with other “foodies”, food writers, journalists, etc. Looking forward to the next class.
I’ll be doing a “proper” blog post about it tomorrow on Azahar Sevilla.

It started off as a typical Monday… working on the websites, answering emails, going out for a haircut, a bit of shopping. Then came the message late afternoon… “Are you going to the jamón and wine event?”. Well, up until then I wasn’t but how could I refuse? 15 Bellotas vs 15 Botellas. I did my best…

For those of you who don’t follow the wonderful @WeWantPlates on Twitter, it features (as the name suggests) photos of weird and, sometimes frankly disgusting, ways of serving food that leave you seriously wishing for a plate. Everything from the almost standard roof slates and mini frying baskets, to various shoes, hats, toys, etc. Always good for a laugh (or sometimes a retch).
Anyhow, at the wine awards this week we were served a few snacks afterwards and suddenly THIS thing came around. I don’t know what it’s supposed to be. A jamón volcano with bread stick lava spewing out the top? It didn’t do anything to harm the wonderful jamón attached to it, but it also didn’t do anything to inhance it. So you know… why not just use a plate?

I love Sevilla. For four days at Flores Jamón & Vinos the offer is a large plate of jamón Ibérico de bellota with two glasses of fino for 15€ – a crazy good price. And if I check in on either 4 Square of Yelp (and I will!) I’ll get a half-bottle of Osborne fino. Yep, I’ll be there. 🙂
But not until tomorrow. Gotta work tonight.
