Six years ago today I became a Certified Sherry Educator!

It’s an honour to be included in such illustrious company and a privilege to introduce people to this most amazing wine, or help them expand on their knowledge of it. You never stop learning about sherry, it’s a delicious world to discover, and to keep on discovering.

Also many thanks to all the wonderful bodegas that have always been so generous and welcoming and the fabulous bars in #Sevilla that help make my sherry experiences extra special. Salud! 💛

I’m happy to report that my Sherry Tastings have become quite a success. Different from my Sherry & Tapas Tour in that, although there are snacky food pairings during the tasting (to me sherry is always better appreciated with food, especially by “novices”), it is a more concise introduction to sherry, lasting about 1.5 hours. At the moment I’m working with a few different venues, looking for the best “fit”, though it may turn out that I end up with more than one option. It’s all good!  🙂

I first met fellow sherry educator (and professional venenciadora) Fabiola Bonke @spanjetotaal a couple of years ago at a casual sherry tasting held at Bodegas Faustino Gonzalez @cruzviejajerez in Jerez, which had been organized by my friend Tomoko @tomokotours. Fabiola is Dutch, but her parents are both Spanish, and she has become the most important sherry expert in Holland. Awhile back she got in touch saying she was going to be in Jerez for the Copa Jerez finals and would be staying overnight in Sevilla on the way.

So I recommended a couple of nice reasonably priced hotels and she chose one that is literally a stone’s throw from my house. And so just after she arrived and got settled in I picked Fabiola up for a sherry-based Tapeo Extremo. Our first stop was Las Teresas, my favourite place for both ambiance and jamón Ibérico de Bellota. They also have some excellent sherries.

After that we carried on to two more bars – Bodeguita Romero and La Cata Ciega, sampling amazing sherries and tasting delicious tapas. And all the while talking talking talking… what a lovely evening. And the good news is that we will be meeting up again in Jerez because I am also going to be at Copa Jerez. Yay!

sherry-practiceIt’s going to be a very sherry month while I prepare for the Big Event in London. And what better way to start my extra practice than with my friend Silvia, a sommelier, fellow sherry educator, and daughter of a master sherry blender? What’s going on here is simply helping me focus on what I am able to identify and giving that structure.

Aside from doing something similar to this on a daily basis (either at bars or at home) I will also be going to as many tastings as possible. That includes three sherry tastings (two in Sevilla, one in Jerez) over the weekend being given by different bodegas , and a getaway to Sanlúcar mid-month to visit bodegas there. At the moment it seems a bit daunting, but now with “extra added structure” thanks to Silvia, I can take things step by step.

sherry educatorI am now an Certified Sherry Educator!

I honestly can’t tell you how thrilled I am about this. The course was intense and a great combination of hard work and fun. The teachers were all outstanding, the visits, tastings, meals, etc all top notch. And the part of the exam I’d feared most (blind tasting) was very challenging, but I took my time (literally the last one to leave) and ended up getting a 6/6. Phew!

More on the course later, just wanted to put this up to show you before I head out for a final day in Jerez with friends, doing a “Tabanco Trawl”. I’m soooooo happy, guys. Truly a dream come true. Yay me!  🙂
