It’s August 1st and I am officially ‘on holiday’.
No classes until September. Yay! Well okay, no income either, but I’ve been looking forward to this stretch of time ahead of me not having to be anywhere or do anything unless I feel like it. It will especially be nice not to be woken up by alarm clocks (well, other than the pointy-eared variety).
When I asked earlier about what summer stuff everyone was planning to do I still hadn’t made any major plans, and then I realised that what I wanted most was a month totally without plans. So there. π
Well, there are a few things I want to do like go to the gym in the mornings and do some stuff around the apartment. But mostly I reckon I’ll be reading and hanging out online (hence that particular thumbnail), taking evening walks with Nog, going out for our *emergency cold beer and air-conditioning sessions* and the occasional tapa, and also watching films and playing with floppy cats who – I am very happy to report – appear to be friends again. They’ve even started playing fighting again, with no pee in sight, which to me is even more of a sign of them being pals again than falling asleep together.
For awhile it looked like a recent bad back incident (comment 19) had put the kibosh on my gym idea, but after a couple days of anti-inflammatories, gentle stretching and lots of walking I think I’ll be able to start back maΓ±ana.
Meanwhile, Sevilla has pretty much turned into a ghost town already, which is always a pleasant change of pace.
So all in all, August should be a nice month for carping the diem.
How’s your summer been so far?
Ahhhh, it sounds like the perfect summer holiday. Being somewhere you love, with someone you love, and free to do whatever takes your fancy.
Glad to hear the cats are pals again!

Oh, and I have recently had a bad back incident too. Went to a chiropractor on Monday and was told I have a fallen arch on my right foot and need an orthotic – that will apparently stop my lower back muscles having to spasm to compensate. Weird.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday! I’m sure it will be much more relaxing than mine was.

Pure w*rk!
I really don’t understand where this summer went. In one way it’s been a good summer for w*rking since the weather has been rather lousy.
Hopefully there will be some possibilities for sneaking out from w*rk the coming weeks. The Noble Knight will spend a couple of weeks here in the middle in August and I wouldn’t mind seing him more than during breakfast.

You summed it up very nicely, truce. Sorry to hear about your back – are you feeling better now?
I read about the holiday-from-hell, hmh … sometimes the best holidays are those without any serious expectations.
Dq – the summer hasn’t gone yet! I’m sure a couple of weeks with NK will get you feeling a bit perkier and also keep you from w*rking your butt off every summer day.
The one good thing about my fucked-up back is that I actually have to get up and walk around every 15 minutes or so, or else everything totally seizes up. And long walks actually make the back feel much better. So can’t just sit around vegging. Just looking for that silver lining, ya know?

It also turns out that this is kind of a ‘bonus’ week as the 31st of August falls on a Friday so no work will start again until Sept 3rd. So it’s one of those ‘five-week months’.
Just as well as there are a few errands and other niggly things to take care of this week before seriously getting down to doing whatever.
Whatever that may be. π

I have no huge summer plans except for a wedding I’m attending in Salmon Arm the weekend of the 10 -12th. Sounds like you have the right idea, though! I can’t believe how fast July went by…

Off for a weeks walking in the Yorkshire Dales/Lake District, followed by a week on the Llangollen canal. Bit less exotic than last year’s Canadian epic, but if the weather sorts itself out, should be very pleasant.

Having a summer wedding to look forward to sounds lovely, WC. Will you be wearing your Birkenstocks?
I hope the weather behaves for you, Johnny. I never made it to the Lake District when I was living in England, though I’ve heard it’s quite gorgeous there. Likewise the Yorkshire Dales. Mosquitos aside, that is. π
I’m hoping that August doesn’t pass quite as quickly as July did. Since Nog and I aren’t working this might help slow things down a bit … most of our *had to get done* errands are done now, so other than some house stuff we want to do it looks to be a very pleasant and lazy-ish month ahead of us.

Damn right I’ll be wearing the Birks!

Go for it grrrrlfriend. I’d opt for Mephistos myself … slightly different design but total comfort.
Happily the very notion of ever wearing four-inch spiky ‘come-fuck-me’ stilettos has never remotely entered into what I think of as sexy feet.
And for the record, I happen to have quite sexy feet. π

I have Mephistos, too. In fact…funny story…I was in a suburb of Chicago a few years back visiting in-laws and there was this Value Village-like store. I found a pretty much brand new pair of Mephisto sandals there in my size for $3.99. I am not shitting you! I still have them!

That’s amazing! Last pair I bought cost 95β¬, but to me they are worth every penny.
I usually buy one new pair of Mephistos every summer, so I normally have about three or four pairs going, of different ages and in various states of wearability.
Given that I wear sandals from roughly the end of February to sometime in November it’s very important to have comfortable long-wearing ones. Too bad I don’t like the styling of Mephisto shoes – I have to resort to wearing Campers four months out of the year.
