shades of grey

Got a haircut this week! Since my peluquero of more than 20 years sadly died of Covid in early 2021 it’s been tricky because I am an annoying drop in client and Joaquín never minded that. All I ever want is a quick wash and trim (dos dedos), no blow dry or styling, it takes less than 15 mins. BUT I have to be on my way home (wet hair) and so I drop in when the timing is just right. These days it usually takes a couple of tries, and this week I lucked out.

Looks like I am one trim (maybe two) away from being all natural, which unfortunately isn’t the stunning pure silvery-white I’d been hoping for… apparently I am “dove grey” with white at the temples. I like the white bits but hope it doesn’t make me look like Grandpa Munster! But it actually feels good not to be bothered about hair colour anymore. Just one less thing, you know?

what a day!

what a day

Paul is back in town this week, and is very generously offering to be the “auxiliary stomach”, helping out with some Tapas Research. For the most part tapas bar visits are 2-stomach affair, a few tapas can be sampled and that’s fine, especially for updates. But some restaurants clearly require 3-or-4-stomachs, such as the fabulous Restaurante La Peña, in order to be able to sample a good selection of what they have to offer. And so we found ourselves on the edge of Nervión today and I have to say we had what will probably end up being one of the best meals of 2024.

I’ve known Mario (manager and front of house) forever and so when he opened La Peña back in 2019 with chef Alejandro I was there! And I was also there to update a couple of years later… but you know… it’s a bit of hike from the centre (but well worth it – and the metro tram drops you off five minutes away)… also it’s mostly a restaurant. There are a few tapas but you really want to go there with a full-on appetite and – at least – three stomachs.

And so we feasted and feasted and afterwards walked back (about 45 minutes or so) stopping for a penúltima at Las Teresas before finally getting home around 7.00 pm. Now THAT’S a proper lunch.

what a day 2

  • tuna and manteca paté on sourdough
  • whole artichoke with vinaegrette
  • crispy fried cuttlefish strips
  • cornichas gallegas – delicate sweet clams in garlicky sherry butter
  • cardoons al velouté with fried egg
  • seaweed-wrapped baked monkfish with its liver, fennel, leek, cauliflower
  • sizzling abanico Ibérico with chips

what the actual…?

morcilla

It’s been a rough 24 hours for my girl. Yesterday Morcilla started vomiting, mostly liquid and foam after the little she ate at breakfast had gone. And it kept up most of the afternoon. I got in touch with Sonia the vet and she recommended bringing her in, but I was loathe to put her (and me!) through that trauma if we didn’t have to. So we spent the evening with Morcilla looking quite forlorn, her tail down, noticeably unwell. She perked up a bit towards bedtime, had some water and then we went to bed. I was under vet’s orders not to feed her anything until the next day, and then it had to be an easily digestible “prescription diet” paté which I’d have to pick up in the morning.

Overnight there was one small incident but otherwise Morcilla seemed to be feeling better and this morning she was her usual playful self. That pic is from today with my favourite office assistant back on the job. Both cats were clearly annoyed that they weren’t allowed into the bedrooms (Peter’s duvet got puked on yesterday when we weren’t looking) but now it looks like we’re in the clear. Morcilla has to stay on the special food for another day or two and my god she is totally gobbling it up, so fingers crossed it was just a bit of stomach upset and nothing more.
