ficus 2024

The hundred year old “San Jacinto Ficus” that was brutally cut down two years ago has been pronounced officially dead by city council. I took the photo above earlier this month, concerned at how badly it had deteriorated from even a year ago. When it was first “rescued” in 2022 after public outcry we were told that city council would take over responsibility of its care and maintenance from the church, which seemed optimistic at the time. But now it seems this was always the outcome they wanted as the tree was left to wither and slowly die over these past two years. No words.

last pedi 24

When I discovered the little nail place in my street earlier this year I decided to splash out on a pedicure as I hadn’t had one since 2018 (!) and boy did it show. I mean, not just the toe nails, but the state of my feet in general. This is now the third one I’ve had this summer and will be the last one this year. I’ve come to realise that they are not as much of a “luxury” as I once thought simply because I can’t manage the same kind of treatment on my own. I mean, I don’t try to cut my own hair either. Anyhow, this is the first summer I can remember that I didn’t end up with cracked and bleeding heels (though that might also be due in part to NOT BEING ABLE TO WALK) and for that alone it’s been worth it. Plus they are really nice!

nigella (1)

A couple of weeks ago I saw that Nigella Lawson was back on Bluesky – or at least giving it another go – and she posted a recipe to her spicy “green sauce”. A simple yet totally addictive salsa. Vegetarian/vegan too. My version is a bit of an adaptation, but you can see both below…
