My friends Ang & Ryan (aka @JetsLikeTaxis) told me after my birthday feast with them, Peter and Eduardo that they also wanted to treat me to a birthday lunch sometime. I’d seen this new place called Sahumo that sounded intriguing, but it was a restaurant, not a tapas bar. “Never fear!” said A & R, saying they were also up for anything, and so off we went. “Sahumo” is the first person singular in Spanish for “to scent with smoke” and the place features a wood grill and oven. As well as a menu that largely features MEAT. After a lovely amuse-bouche of potato parmentier with smoked cod, we started off sensibly with some gorgeous wood-grilled assorted veggies. This was followed by another sensible choice – some beautifully grilled presa Ibérica with papas arrugá (wrinkles potatoes) and fabulous mojo pijón. But what to have next?

Well, the Galician beef caught my eye, as it’s probably the best beef in Europe, and I saw that it was priced by the kilo on the menu. So we ordered it but somewhere along the line I either missed hearing, or it just didn’t register, the waiter saying it would be a KILO of meat. Until it came. And holy fuck, there it was, an ENTIRE KILO OF MEAT. It was also pretty much bleeding all over the plate even though we’d ordered it “medium”. Luckily A & R were also happy about sending it back for a bit more time on the fire, and when it came back it was perfect and delicious. Still pink, with a gorgeous texture and smoky flavour… heaven. Seriously one of the best meals I’ve had in years. There will be a review up soon on Sevilla Tapas.

So that probably wraps up Birthday Celebrations for 2015. Well maybe… 😉

It’s out and about! The Seville Gastronomic Heritage guide to tapas.
You can find the app here… Visita Sevilla

Establishments suggested come from a popular survey conducted by Tourism Board of City of Seville website between April 15 and September 15, 2013, as well as from a selection prepared by a technical commission of experts composed of Julio Fernández, Chef of the Michelin Star restaurant Abantal, Fernando Huidobro, president of the Andalusian Academy of Gastronomy and Tourism, Javier Compás, wine tasting technician, journalist and gastronomic writer. Shawn Hennessey, best gastronomy Twitter 2013 and author of Sevilla Tapas gastronomy tours. And Paco Sánchez, historic bar-restaurant owner in town, former owner of Bar Giralda and Bar Estrella. As a rule, these establishments are limited to the traditional and touristic heart of the city, although some other establishments are also included beyond that area because of uniqueness, quality and tradition.

sevruga
A week ago today was a bank holiday and my fabulous friend Eduardo invited me out to a 20th anniversary lunch at a fabulous restaurant in a small village just outside Sevilla called Coria del Río. And so we spent a lovely afternoon at Restaurante Sevruga (named after a local caviar). When we arrived Edu introduced me to the owners, Pepín and Irene, a lovely couple who’d opened their restaurant and tapas bar eight years ago. After pouring us some wine Pepín asked what we wanted to order and Edu said – “just bring us some stuff”. What followed was a wonderful tasting menu of some of Pepín’s favourite dishes: crispy fried quail thighs in a soy-teryaki emultion, grilled langoustine and monkfish brochette with green apple reduction and paprika potato purée, sole fillet wrapped around white asparagus and then fried in squid ink batter…. you get the picture.  The rolled slow-roasted lamb served on lemon potato purée with garlic confit and aubergine compote wasn’t too shabby either.

Afterwards we waddled up to the top floor bar for some lemon and cava sorbet (and caramel cheesecake for Edu) and, if it had been a pleasanter day, instead of grey and pissy, we might have taken the little ferry back over the river. Instead we went back to Sevilla the usual way and had a late afternoon cocktail at Lab4 before heading home. You can see more of our Sevruga experience on Sevilla Tapas…

It was a great little day trip, in wonderful company.
