calima

Calima is an atmospheric phenomenon that happens when Sahara sand drifts over to Spain, leaving the skies an eerie orange hue and affecting air quality. When accompanied by rainfall it becomes lluvia de barro (muddy rain) and the dust and sand particles are dragged down to earth, covering every possible surface. Good idea to stay in. And watch out for zombies.

decanter cadiz

Yay! My copy of Decanter arrived today with my travel article about Cádiz. Many thanks to Michael @RenoirGuides for sending it – somehow it never feels real until I’m holding the magazine in my hot little hands. Thinking about where to go next. Any ideas? 🍷

UPDATE: it’s now online!

masks

Starting today the outdoor mask mandate has been lifted other than for when people are at crowded outdoor events (football matches, concerts) though to be honest it gets just as crowded at midday on Calle Sierpes here. The Ministry of Health still recommends the use of the mask outdoors when there are crowds in which it is not possible to maintain a distance of one and a half meters. Again, like most streets in the centre of Sevilla. But this is a recommendation, not a requirement. Getting mixed responses on Twitter. One guy on Twitter said he was going to wait and see what everyone else was doing… not usually the best indicator of how one should actually behave. Basically I agree with this guy…

I am just going to keep on the way I have been. Since I am usually going somewhere when I go out and will have to put a mask on before entering anyhow, why not just wear it? I mean, if I am walking outside and there is nobody around, I’ll pull the mask down to my chin so I can breathe more easily, and then if someone shows up I just have to pull it up again. Easy. There’s so much we still don’t know, especially about the new omicron variants… and now more reports are coming in about long covid and other ways the virus continues to affect our bodies after it’s supposedly gone.

Meanwhile, in Spain masks are still required everywhere indoors unless you are seated at a table in a restaurant. They are still required on all public transit, and in hospitals and schools. What’s it like where you are?

they’re baaaack!

When old friends return and bring their old friends with them, and then you end up having the best of times being together again, and also for the first time 💛

As I mentioned the other day, Xavier and Nina are back and this time with their friends Ginny and Wade, and we met up for a fun afternoon tapeo. And as I also mentioned, I have been invited to join them for lunch at NOOR in Córdoba on Friday. SO EXCITED.

streaming

A week or so ago I had a look through music streaming options. Years ago I paid for Spotify but wasn’t happy with it and then I started listening to YouTube music at home on the laptop. Yes, with the pesky ads, but whatever. Then a couple of months ago my trusty old iPod Nero suddenly kicked the bucket – one day all the music just disappeared – so I had nothing to listen to on my walks. And so I tried out YouTube premium on a trial offer but it felt a bit clunky.

So then it was back to Spotify and I decided to sign up for one month and give it another try. TWO DAYS before all the shit hit the fan with the Neil and Joni protests (omg felt so proud to be Canadian!) which left me with almost a month of paid for Spotify. Which okay, I will use up because, let’s face it, I’m not made of money. But I am now left looking for an alternative. Because I really want to keep up my walks and having music with me just makes it so much more pleasurable.

So, do you have a favourite? I’m thinking of going with Apple Music because their catalogue is similar to Spotify and they don’t promote shitbag podcasters. But maybe there are others out there?
