Malaga, wines

Off to Málaga again! Well, maybe.

Not a holiday this time though. And no, I cannot afford this in the slightest, but it kind of just happened … or well, it’s almost happened. It all started a couple of weeks ago when María Paz told me she had to drive down to Málaga to pick up friends at the airport and said if I wanted to take some time off (she knows I love Málaga) that she could give me a lift and drop me off, and that she would also be glad of the company. I told her I wasn’t able to take holidays but later I thought it might be a good opportunity to visit the Málaga vineyards. You may recall that I’ve been working with a client on her social media stuff and so a visit to the vineyards and bodega would not only be interesting but would also help with writing the blog posts. And of course a couple of days staying at Manolo’s fabulous apartment wouldn’t be hard to take. But things haven’t quite turned out as planned…

seville, tapas, tuna

All this plus a beer for Nog and a glass of wine for me cost 7€.

People who know me and who also follow @SevillaTapas on Twitter probably wonder how I can afford to go out for tapas so often … and the truth is I can’t, and also, looks can be deceiving. About half the time I’m invited out by friends, the rest of the time Nog & I go out and share a tapa with a drink each, which usually costs about 5€. Not bad for an evening out or an after-Saturday-morning-errands snack. And this way I also keep the “live photos” thing going on Twitter and Facebook, which I hope drives some traffic over to the Sevilla Tapas blog (and may lead to tour bookings!).

But the best tapas deal by far has to be the recently discovered Jueves Gastronómicos at a tiny bar near my house called Extraverde. Each Thurdsay (jueves) they choose one food item and make three special tapas for 1 euro each. Last night they featured tuna and above you can see tuna tartare served on little toasts, baked tuna with mixed greens and tuna tataky on a bed of marinated roasted peppers. Unbelievable value. I’ve only been to one other JG (featuring avocado) and sadly missed the one with beets(!), but hope to make this a regular Thursday outing. Last night while we were sitting there with the doors of the bar wide open and a gentle fragrance of azahar drifting in from the square I just wanted time to stand still, it all felt so perfect.

Where do you usually go to eat out?
What could you get for 7€ (approx $10)?

portugal

I came across this wonderful Portuguese food shop quite by accident the other day when Nog & I were out for a walk and made a special trip back on Friday because I was told they have fresh Portuguese bread brought in that day. Memories of Lisbon and Tavira came flooding back after making a simple lunch of crusty bread, a selection of cheeses, black olive paste and salad.

Actually, that’s the typical starter in most Portuguese restaurants. I swear I could almost live on bread & cheese alone. Well, with a nice wine and some sort of fresh veg.  But they just don’t have good bread in Sevilla. I can’t remember what it was like when I lived in Salamanca, but in Barcelona the bread has a lot more character and flavour. Maybe it’s an Andalusian thing? White “cotton wool” tasteless pap with a pale and very uncrusty crust.  Bleh.

You can see more photos below (including lunch!) …
