Excited and nervous. Last time I visited these little piggies in Jabugo was back in 2017, which was also the last time I went to Restaurante Arrieros in nearby Linares de la Sierra. And next week I’m going to do both again, along with quite a few other cool pig-related things. It all started when I ran into Adela & Luismi at Manolo Cateca in January and they told me they were retiring in July and so would be closing Arrieros. I made a mental note that I would have to visit again before then. Then I wrote my All About The Pig article for Bitesize Sevilla and thought a follow-up piece focusing on just jamón would be a good idea, and that I could combine a trip to the Sierra de Aracena to also do some research for the final part of the Bitesize Day Trips series. And THEN I was commissioned by Pellicle Magazine to write a piece on jamón cutters (!!). So aside from visiting Arrieros one last time I also had three articles to research, which (to me anyhow) totally justified taking a trip.
Gonna say it’s been complicated, especially trying to organise transportation (basically impossible to do this trip without a car). But with the help of friends and contacts it finally came together. I’ll be based in Aracena for two nights and during the three days I am there will be visiting my friends at Finca Buenvino, jamón producers in Jabugo and Corteconcepción, restaurants in Linares and Fuenteheridos, along with the Jamón Museum and Gruta de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders) in Aracena. Stay tuned!

The Asociación de Guías Gastronómicos de Andalucía is into its second year and today we held the annual assembly to talk about what we’ve done over the past year, review the accounts and discuss future plans. The Sevilla City Office generously let us use one of their meeting rooms and we were able to set it up so members outside of Sevilla could join us via Zoom (we are 38 members strong now). Stay tuned for more news from us.

Now anyone can get their Covid-Flu boosters in Andalucía (before mid-November they were doing it by age groups and by appointment only). At over 600 health centres in the region you can just pop in any Wednesday without an appointment and get your jab, though you still have to check which hours they each place is offering this service. You can look up your city here… Puntos de Vaccinación Sin Cita. 👍

This week the Asociación de Guías Gastronómicos de Andalucía (AGGA) held a special meeting to elect a new treasurer and two new committee members. Both Lola (president) and María (treasurer) are expecting daughters any minute now and, while Lola will be back after her maternity leave, María has decided to step down as treasurer, though she will continue to be a member.
Meanwhile, for the past few months Sharon, Alejandro and Clotilde have been included in the Executive Committee group chat (there’s also a members one) and have been helping with organisation and the general functioning of the association, so it was time to make them official committee members.
Sharon is taking over the treasurer post and Clotilde and Ale will continue as a part of the committee but now in an official capacity. It’s actually been great having these three with us, especially as our membership grows (we are now 34 strong), not only to spread out the work load but also to rely on for fresh ideas and inspiration. It’s all good.
