copa jerez
So there I was enjoying my morning coffee in bed with the cats (though actually at work, checking emails and social media stuff on the iPad) and I remembered that it was the Copa Jerez (Sherry Cup), where chefs chosen from seven different countries would meet in Jerez and create special dishes to pair with a particular sherries. And I thought… well, why not? Well, other than I didn’t have an invitation and my friend Annie thought it was too late for her to get one for me. Details, details. I decided to hop on the next train and gatecrash the event. Which turned out to be no problem at all, and anyhow, had I planned to go earlier I would have got an invite. But I digress.

Annie drove in from Vejer and picked me up at the train station. From there we went off to the event, watched a bit of the judging, but for the most part partook of the sherry on offer from 15 bodegas, along with some wonderful jamón and cheese. The competition and various interviews were over by 2 o’clock and I was invited to join a lunch party at a lovely spot called Ajo Negro. Then caught the 6 o’clock train home, arriving just in time to get to pick up my tapas tour clients at our meeting point. Phew!

It was great to see old friends again and catch up, and I also made some good contacts for future sherry education. So it was a good thing I didn’t just stay in bed with my coffee!

feria jerez friends

Every other time I’ve gone to the Feria in Jerez I’ve spent almost all my time taking photos of the gorgeous horses. This time I spent most of the day drinking sherry in the Gonzalez Byass tent with these lovely people. Well, it was different! And really nice to meet up with old friends again, as well as meet some new ones. But I’m kind of sorry I missed the horses (sorry Beth!). Hope I’ll be able to go again next year.

tio pepe en rama
So this is what I did on Friday! It was supposed to be a day off but my friend Fiona (aka Scribbler in Seville) asked if I was going to this very cool wine tasting event, which led to us both going there and then going for tapas afterwards, followed by a visit to a pop-up store that was taking place in a lovely boutique hotel, which included having rooftop drinks. After that I met up with Peter and as it was such a beautiful warm evening we just strolled around, eventually stopping for more tapas. I think I do less on working days! How do you like to spend days off?

Last night Jessica and I went to a fabulous sherry tasting (cata de jerez) at La Azotea Vinos & Más, which was both fun and educational. I’ve never known much about Spanish sherries and so it was great that José Argudo from Bodegas Gonzalez Byass took us through the whole sherry-making process while we sampled ten – yes that’s right, ten!! – different sherries. From the palest driest mosto to sweet musky fino/oloroso blends, we sipped our way through it all, even sampling some lovely 30-year-old wines.

Afterwards Juan brought over a jamón from their La Azotea restaurant across the street and we all had a bit to eat, though not nearly enough for the amount of wine we’d had, so Jessica and I went off to the Alameda for a late night snack, ending up at Al Aljibe.

We had a great time catching up on all our news and I’m really glad that Jess is going to be in town for awhile and not out doing field work in Doñana so much. It’s nice having her “home” again.
