adiós photohunt!

I started posting weekly photos on the Saturday Photohunt three years ago this month. Although I really enjoyed “playing” it was always frustrating leaving a comment with a link to my photo on the Photohunt Blogger site. Then sometime in 2011 the person hosting Photohunt switched to a WordPress blog after many people on the Photohunt Facebook group complained about not being able to leave comments on Blogger. What a relief that was, though since many of the “players” use Blogger I still had to just view their photos without being able to leave comments. Occasionally I would go through the 5-6 tries before Blogger recognised my Open-ID, and then go through a few more hoops putting in the wonky letter thing and whatnot, but most of the time I couldn’t be bothered. But least I was finally able to leave my comment on the Photohunt site!

Then the original Photohunt host retired in December and there was a scramble for “ownership”, which ended up a bit messy with two people starting new Photohunt blogs … both on Blogger! Why? Apparently because they are used to Blogger. And so to hell with the rest of us who don’t want to have to open a Blogger account in order to leave comments. You would think that someone hosting something like this would want to choose the blogging platform that was most comfortable for all users, not just for the person hosting. Apparently not. So I am outta there. It’s no longer fun. Adiós Photohunt!

Yesterday morning I went through my Málaga pics and had a lovely time reliving those memories. Peter and I left very early on Monday morning and arrived in Málaga with the whole day ahead of us. After setting up the apartment (we bring our own sheets, towels, kitchen stuff, etc) we went out to explore the city. First thing on the agenda was something I had never done during previous trips to Málaga – a trip up to the Parador Gibralfaro to enjoy a drink on their “balcony of Málaga” terrace, which turned out to be a perfect start to our mini-break. Afterwards we walked down the mountain (we’d taken a taxi up) and after a stroll around town had a fab lunch outdoors at La Cosmopolita. Later we checked out the new port area that was finally open to the public and went back to the apartment to rest up … we had dinner plans with food blogger Sarah and her husband at La Moraga, which ended up being a lovely evening.

Next morning we went to the Picasso Museum and saw both the permanent exhibition and the Alberto Giocometti retrospective and then headed off to the Atarazanas Market. After that – another first. We stopped in at the oldest bar in Málaga, Antigua Casa de Guardia, for a glass of sherry. It’s a rather bizarre place, full of both locals and tourists sampling sherries from the various stacked casks along with steamed mussels and grilled prawns. We just had a quick drink and headed out to find a place for lunch. After trying a fish joint and getting burnt rosada (sent back – cheque please!) we went to one of our favourites, Dos Gatos, and got some perfectly grilled rosada along with some terrific presa. Then another walk before heading home. Later that evening, after watching a spectacular sunset from the balcony (last photo in the slide show) we went to check out the Christmas lights, which is something Málaga does big time. Then home again for a light snack and a dvd before hitting the hay.

Third and last day in town we took a walk along the port before checking out the Eugenio Chicano exhibit at the Municipal Museum. Then there was just time for a stroll around the centre and a final lunch at La Reserva del Pastor before collecting our stuff from the apartment and catching the train home.

One of the best birthday presents ever. Thanks Peter!

Saw this over at Nag on the Lake … not just the usual photoshopped before & after pics but a link to this article at Wired Science that talks about a new photograph-analyzing tool that tells you just how much a photo has been altered. Had I known about photo altering and air-brushing as a pre-teen, and had I been able to see comparative images like this, I might have been saved much misery and self-loathing.

Last night I was out with my friend Eduardo from Different Spain for a short tapeo. I got to our first stop a bit early so, while I was waiting for Edu, I took some photos of the place in case I liked it enough to put in my Sevilla Tapas blog. No problem. Got a few outside and interior shots and, though the waitress looked at me with curiosity, she didn’t say anything. When Edu arrived he took his iPhone inside to take a few pictures and the cook told him that the manager didn’t allow people to take photos. Huh?

Then I remembered one time I was in El Corte Inglés and saw somebody taking a photo of something on a shelf, presumably to remember a price or show someone at home, and the security guard came up and told him he wasn’t allowed to take photos.

So this morning I asked on Twitter if it is actually legal for a place that is open to the public to ban photo taking and the general response was that it was at the discretion of owner/manager, regardless of the location being open to the public. Someone also pointed out that many museums and monuments don’t allow photos, but in those places you are clearly warned with signs when you walk in. Somone else mentioned that once they were in a London bar and were told they could take photos of the bar but not of the bottles on the shelves (eh?). It was also mentioned that in many railway stations they don’t like people taking photos.

What’s been your experience? I’ve never thought twice about taking photos of the restaurants and tapas bars I visit, and to date have never had anyone tell me I couldn’t. I can’t imagine why they would.

digital, photo albums, photos

Was a time when we would sift through our old photos and select our favourites to save in pretty photo albums, or at least we would store them away properly to keep for posterity. In fact, a few years ago I had a go at doing this very thing with a couple of scary boxes stuffed full of old pics, some that I’d even brought over from Canada, and many from the UK. Well, they are still in those boxes. The job has so far proved to be too mind-numbingly tedious to dedicate a full day of my life to.

Then along came digital cameras and suddenly I not only had a few hundred old photos in a box to sort out, but also several thousand scattered throughout various files in my laptop. And well, today was the day. I sat myself down and did the first clean-up, which took about four hours. And I have to say I have a real sense of accomplishment, though some of the sub-files will need further editing. But at least now I know where everything is! What a great feeling.
