Roma, John & Jane

So Jane & John were back in town this past week. They’d told me of their plans for a return visit quite awhile ago and I was looking forward to spending time with them, but then the London trip suddenly came up and I ended up being away for most of their visit. But we had a lovely lunch at Vida Loca yesterday, and today met up one more time at La Barra de Inchausti for a last meal together.

With Roma! Who just arrived in Sevilla yesterday. I first met Roma on a tapas tour in 2014 and she has been back to Spain a few times since then. We last saw each other in Córdoba a couple of years ago when Peter & I went to “do feria” with her there. It’s very seldom (if ever?) that my various friends from around the globe end up meeting, so this was fun. Also looking forward to a quick trip to Cádiz with Roma over the weekend.

It’s been awhile since I had percebes (aka gooseneck barnacles). These creatures are caught off the coast of Galicia, often in dangerous conditions, and they are not cheap. In fact, you seldom see them in restaurants here, let alone tapas bars. So when I saw some on display at Cafetería Donald, and when I found out that Ania @writtenfromseville had never tried them… well, it was a date.

Percebes are simply boiled in salt water (sea water for preference) and you eat them by holding them by the “claw” end and then give the longer end a twist and pull, exposing the meat. At this point you might be squirted with escaping sea water, but no problem. They taste of the sea and have a tender-chewy texture. Really good.

I’ve mentioned Pilar & Pilar before. Daughter Pili was part of my Nuclear Medicine Team while I was undergoing treatment, and before that she was my English student. That is to say, we’ve known each other a long time! And it’s always great when we can find time to get together for lunch, along with mama Pilar.  🙂

Back in November 2010 I was invited by my friend Annie Bennett @anniebennett to join her for dinner at Gastromium. And it turned out to be one of the best meals of my life. Not only because the food was gorgeous, but the service was impeccable, with a lovely Scottish man called Duncan as our maître for the evening. It was such a memorable experience that I have kept the Gastromium post up on Sevilla Tapas, even after they sadly closed their doors and the three chefs moved on to other projects.

So imagine my surprise when I stopped for lunch at Tradevo Centro and one of the waiters said to me in perfect Spanish… hey, you have a website about tapas, don’t you? I told him my website was called Sevilla Tapas and has been going since 2007, and then he said he remembered me having dinner at Gastromium with a friend of mine. IT WAS DUNCAN. And well, we ended up having a nice chat and I thanked him again for having made that evening at Gastromium so memorable. Love when stuff like this happens.

birthdays, friends, sevilla, tapas

The wonderful Julie & Steven (AKA Julia & Esteban) are back in Sevilla to celebrate Steven’s 75th birthday, which is next Tuesday. We got Birthday Week off to a rip-roaring start with an (ahem) 8 hour lunch (!!), which may or may not be a personal record. Started off at Manolo Cateca for a cheeky sherry before having a super delicious lunch at Palo Cortao, along with Julie’s friend Susan, who just happened to be in town for a weekend getaway.

Of course after our leisurely lunch we had to go for a Penúltima and we chose the rooftop of the Gourmet Experience as Susan was really wanting to sit in the sun. Unfortunately, by the time we got there the sun was too low to reach us, but we enjoyed a lovely bottle of cava, and then Susan had to leave us to meet friends for a Flamenco show. By that time we were starting to feel a bit peckish again and Julie remembered how much she loved the pavía de bacalao at Palo Santo, so we strolled over there only to find out that the kitchen still wasn’t open. Undeterred, we decided to have a little pulpo ensaladilla along with yet another penúlitma, but then Eslava’s honey ribs started to sound like a good idea, so we popped over there for a snack while we waited. An hour or so later we were back at Palo Santo for our final snack of the day.

Then it was back home to Netflix with the cats. Looks like it’s going to be a crazy week. The actual birthday dinner will be at Eslava Restaurante on Tuesday, with a few other Sevilla activities between now and then. And then on Thursday I’ll head off to Cádiz with Julie and Steve to spend a couple of days there before they head back to Málaga on Saturday to catch their flight home. Phew!
