calcots, la quinta, sevilla, traditions

Last year Ania @writtenfromseville and I began a new tradition when we went to experience La Calçotada at La Quinta, a local restaurant that also started this tradtion last year. It’s actually a Catalán thing, with the harvest of these tasty spring onions in mid-late January. Traditionally they are roasted over coals, then served with romesco sauce, and the trick is to remove the blackened outside layers to expose the tender delicious centers.

This year it was raining cats and dogs, so we didn’t get to stand outside in the patio like last time. But it was still fun – and delicious – and so this now qualifies as a Shawn-Ania Tradition. The first tradition we came up with was visiting Málaga at Christmas time to see the lights together, which we managed twice, but sadly not this past December. And now it looks like a new SA Tradition is going to be me going out at ungodly hours to cheer my girl on while she runs her 10kms and half marathons, god help me. 😉

semana santa, sevilla, spain, traditions

lutoOn Maundy Thursday and Good Friday women dress “de luto” (in mourning) in black dresses and lace mantillas. And although there are definite rules – no mini-dresses, no red lipstick, no stiletto heels (to name a few) – they are not always observed. The ladies are also always happy to pose for a photo. The blonde woman (upper-left) saw me lurking with my phone out and asked if I wanted a photo, then gathered her friends around for a group shot. And suddenly about half a dozen other people came out of nowhere with cameras ready. Score!

san lorenzo
August 10th is San Lorenzo day and keeping up with a tradition that began (for me) a couple of years ago I headed over to the Antigua Abacería San Lorenzo to take part in the festivities. Grilled flesh was on offer (the martyr San Lorenzo was put to a slow and painful death on top of a large gridiron with live coals beneath it and, the legend concludes that, after enduring the pain for a very long time he made his famous cheerful remark, “I’m well done. Turn me over!”) as well as a typical white wine punch from Huelva called ponche alosnero. San Lorenzo is also the patron saint of cooks and chefs. It all works. Click on the link above to read more about the bar and this unusual annual event.
