hp mini, netbooks

Isn’t this adorable???

And no, it’s not mine. But I’m getting to play with it for a couple of days. On Monday “Málaga Manolo” was here for his class and we were talking about some of the trips that his girlfriend Victoria (my new part-time boss) was going to be taking. I was saying how when she went to Mexico it was difficult to get in touch because she hadn’t taken her laptop and only had the Blackberry, and one thing led to another so that after the class we somehow ended up over at Fnac getting this little baby for Victoria’s next trip to the US. I very generously offered to set up the netbook for her (ha, you kidding? I couldn’t wait to get my mitts on it) and it’s really been fun. It’s only about 18 x 26 cm (7 x 10 inches) and perfect for travelling. Gotta give it back tomorrow…

Things are getting back to “normal” here again after the annual upheaval that is Semana Santa. Part of me really likes how everybody’s routines are totally disrupted during this week, even if they don’t attend any of the processions. I know that if I didn’t live next to the cathedral I wouldn’t bother going out to see them (though I did the first few years I lived here) and I know I would miss that. Sure, it’s a week of unpaid holidays and getting out my front door can sometimes be difficult because of the crowds, but it’s also kind of refreshing to have things shaken up a bit. As usual, this year all of my students (all = 4) cancelled classes for the week, but I ended up working more than ever…

online store, websites

I’ve been having the best time working on my new store project with my old h2g2 pal, Taliesin. He came to my rescue the other day and has not only moved my old website for me, but is helping me design the new version. What a guy!

I’m hoping to have the store fully functional by March 1st … I think that should give Tal & me enough time to finish the design and techy stuff, as well as get the stock and shipping side of things organised. There’s a lot to do, and I will probably just start off with a few choice items, but along with English classes and possible tapas tours & wine tasting evenings, I might actually end up with something resembling an income.

Meanwhile, this is all so exciting and also very interesting. Tal is doing all the “heavy lifting” for this move and new set up, but I’ve been helping out here and there and also learning A LOT, which is always fun.

The generosity of my friends continues to overwhelm me.

bluehost, joomla, websites

Aaaaaack!

I realised yesterday morning that the end of the month was coming up fast and that I HAD to find a way of moving my natural clothing site over to my self-hosted azahar sevilla site. I have been trying to do this for the past couple of years … well, I have asked the guy who designed the online store on several occasions to help me move it. He finally told me I owed him money (say what?) and that he wouldn’t give me “permission” to move the site until I paid up. Jerk. I mean seriously, I’m embarrassed to admit how much Nog & I had paid for this thing five years ago and then the guy kept my domain name. I don’t actually want the name back, but now I can’t access the other host site because it’s in his name, not mine. Grrr…

If I were doing this again now (and in fact I will be doing soon, with the Seville Store) I’d just make my own. But back then I didn’t know anything about all this website building stuff. And so… spent all day yesterday trying to make back-ups and installing a content management system (Joomla) and then trying to figure out how to upload the back-up until my shoulders felt like they were in a vice grip and I was speaking in half sentences (Nog says that when I get intensely involved in something I start sentences and then drift off, never finishing them …).

I really hope that after some industrial strength coffee this morning that I’ll be able to see things more clearly.  After having spent so much on this I would hate to lose it, especially as I hope to be able to use the site again some time in the future.

And although it was very frustrating, I’m actually quite pleased about how much I learned yesterday. But I’m still not there yet. Wish me luck! And if anyone out there knows how I can upload my backed up files to the new CMS on FTP, I’m all ears.

christmas

This is some of the stuff I did yesterday so that I could just sit back and enjoy Christmas Eve today. After yoga class (last one till January 8th) I met my friend Juan for a Christmas brekky and I was very surprised to see he had a prezzie for me – a book! Which I shall look forward to reading over the holidays. Then I met Nog and we did some food shopping, getting a whack of veggies at the neighbourhood greengrocer and then heading to the supermarket where we got the main course for Christmas dinner: a small leg of lamb, some pork ribs and – a totally spur of the moment purchase – a few quails (don’t ask).

Then it was home to do quite a few house chores, whilst enjoying some surprisingly good cava (at just 1.95€ a bottle). So now the bookshelves are all cleaned and organised, floors are washed, the Christmas tree lights are fixed, and I also finally got the “azahar sevilla forum” up and running (except for “decorating”), thanks to Andy.  Oh, and I put that very pretty festive WP wallpaper on my iPhone. And so, casa az is looking very Christmassy and there is nothing left to do but watch some favourite Christmas films, prepare food, and enjoy one of the best Christmases ever.

What are you guys up to?
