rogene phil

First visit since our first meet up just before Covid lockdown, after knowing each other “virtually” for years, Rogene (aka Maribel) and Phil are back in town. We had a couple of great food and wine filled afternoons, a “Tribeca Tapas Tour” and then Phil’s birthday lunch at Barra Baja. Good times!

helen

I have known Helen @HelenORahilly for YEARS (virtually) and, although she has been to Sevilla and hereabouts several times, this was the first time we actually got to meet up in person. And really it felt like meeting up with an old friend. First a bit of sherry at Manolo Cateca and then a fab tapas lunch at Taberna Zurbarán. This is why I still hold on to Twitter. I’ve met so many amazing people there, and we are still there. At least for now. Anyhow, Helen is off back home to Dublin tomorrow but it was great having an afternoon out together (also enjoyed our whatsapp chats while she was out and about here this week). Hope she’ll be back soon.

anna

Anna is back in town for the week and we had planned to meet up today for a quick visit… then this photo popped up in my instagram stories this morning. Taken exactly six years ago after having lunch with Anna and her kids during a previous visit. How random is that? Anyhow, it was great to catch up but Anna forgot to bring the weather with her (usually the Galicia rain followers her here). Ah well.

niav 2

Another Twitter pal is in town this week. Niav from Dublin has been coming to Sevilla since 1999 and before this visit she got in touch so we made plans to meet up (for the first time). Had a fab lunch at La Barra de Cañabota and the next day Niav came out with me and Peter while I did some Market Research to update info for one of my tours. Of course this included a couple of market stops for snacks and then afterwards some further Tapas Research at Vida Jonda because, well, why not? It’s been fun having Niav here, in person and chatting on whatsapp following her adventures, and I hope she’ll be back soon.

what a day

Paul is back in town this week, and is very generously offering to be the “auxiliary stomach”, helping out with some Tapas Research. For the most part tapas bar visits are 2-stomach affair, a few tapas can be sampled and that’s fine, especially for updates. But some restaurants clearly require 3-or-4-stomachs, such as the fabulous Restaurante La Peña, in order to be able to sample a good selection of what they have to offer. And so we found ourselves on the edge of Nervión today and I have to say we had what will probably end up being one of the best meals of 2024.

I’ve known Mario (manager and front of house) forever and so when he opened La Peña back in 2019 with chef Alejandro I was there! And I was also there to update a couple of years later… but you know… it’s a bit of hike from the centre (but well worth it – and the metro tram drops you off five minutes away)… also it’s mostly a restaurant. There are a few tapas but you really want to go there with a full-on appetite and – at least – three stomachs.

And so we feasted and feasted and afterwards walked back (about 45 minutes or so) stopping for a penúltima at Las Teresas before finally getting home around 7.00 pm. Now THAT’S a proper lunch.

what a day 2

  • tuna and manteca paté on sourdough
  • whole artichoke with vinaegrette
  • crispy fried cuttlefish strips
  • cornichas gallegas – delicate sweet clams in garlicky sherry butter
  • cardoons al velouté with fried egg
  • seaweed-wrapped baked monkfish with its liver, fennel, leek, cauliflower
  • sizzling abanico Ibérico with chips
