soundbar (1)

So THE SOUNDBAR arrived much sooner than I thought it would and at first I thought this was a good thing. Ha. What it meant was I lost an entire afternoon setting the fucker up. Initially I thought I’d take a quick glance at it, then looked over the instructions, realised I had NO IDEA how this worked. First instruction was “plug the soundbar into an HDMI ARC port”. Like, with what? It didn’t come with an HDMI cord. And yeah, I could have put it aside for another moment but I’d already unboxed the thing and somehow couldn’t leave it uninstalled. I get like that.

hope 2024

Yep, still here. Another year has come and gone since January 3rd 2009 when I posted a photo of my battered old daybook turned to January 3rd 2010 with the words “STILL HERE!” written on it, as part of a weekly Photo Challenge – the theme that week was Hope. I had finished a second stint of chemo a few months previously and this felt like a very bold thing to do – to hope I’d still be here on the same day a year hence.

I have continued the “tradition of hope” since then and have posted a similar photo on this date each year. Here’s hoping (as always!) that I will still be here January 3rd 2024, and will see this page in my book… and then post my hopeful wish for 2025. ❤️

mar

Back in early October I was sitting at a bar (for a change) in Triana with my friend Lucy and we started chatting with a woman sitting next to us. It turned out she “knew” me from Instagram and so we decided that one day we’d meet up and do some Tapas Research together. Well, what with me getting sick immediately afterwards (gastroenteritis and then covid) and with Mar travelling and then getting sick herself we finally managed to get together today. Met up at La Cayetana and enjoyed a long and very chatty lunch. Mar has a wonderful Instagram account full of great photos and stories about Sevilla. Check it out… @Lost-In-Seville.

Plans are afoot to do have more regular research lunches and maybe also some cultural walks. I reckon between the two of us we know practically EVERYTHING about Sevilla so we can educate each other and have fun too.

patched up

Well this was a Christmas to remember. Yesterday morning I was having coffee at my desk when Peter walked into the living room with a hand over his left eye. I asked what happened and he removed his hand and OMG the eye was BLEEDING. He had bashed it on the corner of his bedroom night stand while bending over to pick something up off the floor. I got him to lie down with a damp cloth over his eye while I got ready and then we were in a taxi on our way to Emergency. I wasn’t sure what to expect when we got there because I knew that, like everywhere, Andalucía is having problems with hospital staff shortages. But in fact it was quite orderly and efficient. It was also quite busy, with lots of people coughing in the waiting room. Thank goodness we still have a mask mandate here (for hospitals, pharmacies and public transit) though most people in the room were wearing sloppy fitting surgical masks. We had put on the FFP2 ones I bought for travelling so at least we were a bit better protected.

Anyhow, after a while we got in to see the ophthalmologist on duty (who looked about 14 years old) and after a primary examination he put some drops in Peter’s eye to dilate the pupil and we waited another hour. By this time there was a different doctor on duty (who looked at least 30) and she did some tests to check for any retina or other damage and, other than half his eyeball being blood red, he should be okay. Then we had to find a pharmacy that was open on Christmas Day to fill his prescriptions and stopped for some restorative jamón and sherry on the way home. Peter has to put antibiotic cream in his eye 4 times a day, “tears” every hour and a lubricant cream overnight (with an eye patch). He also needs to keep an eye on (sorry) any changes in his vision, but the doctor thinks he will be fine. What a day! But of course it could have been much worse so it did end up being a Happy Christmas.
