Today’s Photohunt theme is “covered”.
When I first came to Sevilla in September 1993 one of the first things that struck me about the place were the white awnings that covered the narrow streets in the centre of town. But it wouldn’t be until the following summer when the temperatures got up to 50ºC that I would appreciate their very practical use. At the time I just thought they looked really neat. These pics were taken many years ago, pre-digital camera.

All this plus a beer for Nog and a glass of wine for me cost 7€.

People who know me and who also follow @SevillaTapas on Twitter probably wonder how I can afford to go out for tapas so often … and the truth is I can’t, and also, looks can be deceiving. About half the time I’m invited out by friends, the rest of the time Nog & I go out and share a tapa with a drink each, which usually costs about 5€. Not bad for an evening out or an after-Saturday-morning-errands snack. And this way I also keep the “live photos” thing going on Twitter and Facebook, which I hope drives some traffic over to the Sevilla Tapas blog (and may lead to tour bookings!).
But the best tapas deal by far has to be the recently discovered Jueves Gastronómicos at a tiny bar near my house called Extraverde. Each Thurdsay (jueves) they choose one food item and make three special tapas for 1 euro each. Last night they featured tuna and above you can see tuna tartare served on little toasts, baked tuna with mixed greens and tuna tataky on a bed of marinated roasted peppers. Unbelievable value. I’ve only been to one other JG (featuring avocado) and sadly missed the one with beets(!), but hope to make this a regular Thursday outing. Last night while we were sitting there with the doors of the bar wide open and a gentle fragrance of azahar drifting in from the square I just wanted time to stand still, it all felt so perfect.
Where do you usually go to eat out?
What could you get for 7€ (approx $10)?

Here we go again…
And no, they are not copying the KKK … it’s the other way round. Though to date nobody has ever been able to tell me the origins of these penitent costumes, other than to say that it would be immodest for a penitent to show their face. So okay, that explains the hood, but not the pointy hat thang.
Yesterday was the beginning of Semana Santa – Palm Sunday. People thronged to Sevilla from the suburbs and villages all decked out in their best Palm Sunday attire. My eyes! I took a few pics but decided it would be too cruel to post them. And now for the next seven days I shall be a prisoner in my apartment (stone’s throw from the Cathedral). Seriously no way of getting out my front door most of the time. What fun!
