sherry and tapas (1)

My first Introduction to Sherry Tour was a success! Except for that bit after when I fell down. Can’t even blame the wine as I’d only had two glasses! But my clients got to sample 7 different sherries paired with various tapas, from cheeses and charcuterie to hot dishes and finishing up with cheese and dessert.

Kathleen and Sam were perfect victims guests and asked lots of questions. I was a bit sneaky and didn’t tell them they were my first Sherry & Tapas tour. Happily I was able to answer all their questions and give them lots of information about the wines and the sherry making process. But most importantly they were able to sample the wines the way they are meant to be enjoyed… little by little, with food and friends.

You may recall that I got the idea for this tour when I inadvertently did my own World Sherry Day event last year after missing my train to Jerez that morning, where I’d been invited to attend an event. In the end it turned out for the best because that’s when I realised that sherry is best experienced with food and I wanted to share that experience with other people. Looking forward to future Sherry & Tapas tours now. Even though I still have a lot to learn, for now I know enough to help people learn about and enjoy sherry. And I’m very happy to report that Kathleen and Sam are new sherry converts!

Monday again! And people are moaning about it all over the internet. Not me. I reckon the reason most people hate Mondays is because they hate their jobs. But I love mine. Here are some on-the-job shots from last night. And I’ve got another Flamenco & Tapas tour booked for tomorrow. What’s not to love about starting a fresh new week?

orange days
Went to the press conference announcing the beginning of Orange Days in Sevilla, which I just had time to attend before racing off to a lunchtime Sevilla Tapas Tour. This year I’ve been asked to be one of the judges for this event. Love my job… 🙂

tapas tours 2013
I’m heading out soon for my last Sevilla Tapas Tour of 2013. It’s really been a great year and I continue to love this work. I think because I am sticking to what I like best about it and not trying to make it into something it’s not. I mean, I don’t even think of myself as a “tour guide”, more of a “culinary host” taking people to all my favourite places. And it keep evolving, which I also like.

It’ll be interesting to see how 2014 goes. There are a lot more people doing tapas tours in Sevilla now and some seem to be taking the whole “competition” thing quite seriously. One person who recently started using “Sevilla Tapas Tours” on Twitter (the name I’m been known by for years) went so far as to register that name for their website. Which is why I’m glad that I am doing this in my own way. People may copy my name, they might swipe my ideas and – as has already happened – totally rip off my price list… but they can’t copy me, my experience, or my passion for what I do.

Also, there is so much more to Sevilla Tapas than just food tours. I’ve spent almost seven years building up my website that now has close to 200 bar and restaurant listings in Sevilla, as well as my website for tapas in Andalucía (haven’t counted how many bars are listed there). I’ve worked with the Sevilla Tourist Board on a couple of projects and am suddenly being asked to attend food and wine events as an expert in my field. Which is thrilling, really. And I have more things planned for the new year. So stay tuned!

But now I really must dash! Picking up my guests in half an hour…
