toro de lidia jornadaI went to this press conference last week that announced a promotion of “bull meat products” by way of a competition by about 30 bars and restaurants in town, the challenge being to create a special tapa using the meat of the Toro Bravo (aka Toro de Lidia), which are the bulls raised to fight in the ring. Thing is, a lot of these bulls never make it to the ring and, as they are all free range and healthy as heck, they are a very good source of animal protein.

So I wrote up a blog post on Azahar’s Sevilla and thought that was it until I got a call from the Sevilla Tourism office asking me to be one of the judges. I was given a list of four tapas bars to visit and a form to fill out for each one, rating the tapa. I need to have this done by Sunday and hand in my results on Monday and then, if I want to, attend the awards presentation on Tuesday that will take place on the Feria grounds (the famous Feria de Abril starts at midnight on Monday).

Now I just need to find the time! Honestly so busy these days I barely have time to turn around. Not complaining though. I think this is the life I’ve always wanted! 🙂

lujo
My latest project! I’ve been asked by a luxury tour group to plan a few new “products” for them, based around gourmet food and wine tours in various cities in Andalucía. Excited? You bet! The main problem I’m having at the moment is narrowing the focus to keep the tours intimate and very special. It’ll definitely be a new experience for me, travelling with clients for a few days and keeping them well-fed and happy. Somehow I think I’ll be very good at that. Anyhow, watch this space!

happiest man in sevillaThis is food writer Kalyan, who at lunchtime today was the happiest man in Sevilla, and I am pretty sure that he is about to become even happier. You see, tonight I’ll be meeting Kalyan and his wife Kainaz, who are travelling around Spain and are in town for a few days, and I’ll be taking them out for a tapeo.

This one is “on the house” as Kalyan (@FinelyChopped) is a friend of two Twitter pals of mine, Robin and Simon Majumdar (@HermanoPrimero @SimonMajumdar ) and I think it’s going to be a fun evening. It’s always a bit of an extra challenge when I’m out with another “foodie” and I know that Robin will be checking in to see what we’re up to. You can too on @SevillaTapas, starting around 8.00 pm my time.

So once again good ol’ Twitter is adding some great stuff and new experiences to my life. Love it.

top_hat_&_tiaraAs you can imagine, since I can’t seem to get out of bed for more than an hour or so at a time, I’ve been spending far too much time on the iPhone and iPad the past couple of days. So you can imagine my delight when links to this blog popped up again on Twitter (it’s been mentioned there quite a bit lately). And so I thought I would share it with you because it’s immensely entertaining, riddled with quotable quotes and soooo… well, you decide. Do share some of your favourite bon mots here, if you like.

Betcha can’t stop at just one. 😉

food, salads

salad daysLeave it to me to get a craving for salads as soon as the temperatures plummet (and it starts snowing on my blog!). But this past week or so, for no reason I can fathom, I am suddenly craving lots of crisp leafy greens with grated carrot, sliced onion and some chunks of high-quality preserved tuna (bonito). And when I say crave I mean that once lunchtime starts approaching I can almost feel the crunch of carrot and lettuce and taste the extra virgin olive oil with balsamic vinegar.

What the heck. I’m not going to question this. Of course it might be even healthier (or at least more slimmifying) if I didn’t accompany my salady lunch with a big chunk of pan gallego, but I’m guessing that having this fabulous bread option is what got me interested in salads again. Because really, what goes better with nice crusty bread, no matter what the weather is like? So I reckon I am now getting about 3 a day at lunch.

What’s your favourite way of getting enough veg in your diet?
