manzanilla-monday-1As you may already know… I LOVE MONDAYS. Probably because I love my work. Being freelance, I often don’t even remember what day of the week it is. Except Mondays. Because I just love the idea of starting a fresh new week with lots of possibilities ahead.

Anyhow, this particular Monday was even more special that usual. I was not only invited to the glam Gurmé Awards event, but I was also fortunate enough to attend a special sherry tasting featuring the wonderful manzanillas of Antonio Barbadillo… which made it an extra special Manzanilla Monday. manzanilla-monday-2The tasting took place at La Cochera de Abuelo, a restored coach that is now available for private gastronomical events. It was a vertical tasting, taking us from the first mosto up to a manzanilla pasada, and as always, I learned a lot. It’s always thrilling to listen to a winemaker talk about their product, their “baby”…

sanlucar sherry education
Continuing my sherry education, this time focusing on manzanilla made in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. These three people were very generous with their time and very patient with explaining what makes manzanilla special. Here you can see Nuria (Bodegas Delgado Zuleta – passionate employee), Rosario (Barbadillo – 6th generation family member) and Juan (Hidalgo – 7th generation family member). I’ll be writing much more about my bodega visits on the Azahar Travels blog, but I have to say my 36 hours in Sanlúcar were quite fruitful and very memorable. Also fun! Stay tuned…

feria de la manzanilla
Hot on the heels of my successful World Sherry Day event I thought I’d try to recreate my own Feria de la Manzanilla here this past weekend, since I couldn’t get to the actual Feria in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (crap bus schedule from Sevilla). But although we ate and drank well that day it didn’t feel as special as my afternoon WSD thing, mostly because the waiters and bar people weren’t really into talking about the wines and suggesting good food parings. Ah well, win some lose some.

I get to win again soon because I was speaking to the brand manager from Gonzalez Byass in Jerez and told him that, inspired by my WSD experience, I wanted to start doing Introduction to Sherry tours but I needed to learn more about sherry. So he promised to give me a private sherry tasting class here in Sevilla, including food pairings. Can’t wait!
