This is Carlos González. We’ve known each other by sight for well over 20 years. I remember many times returning exhausted after evening English classes and being soothed by his lovely guitar playing as I passed him on my way home. These days I pass him on my tapas tours and clients are always charmed.

Then one day a couple of months ago we saw each other in the street, in a different part of town and we both stopped – suddenly both out of context – and then I said… “hey, I know you!”. And we started to chat. You can find Carlos almost every evening in the Plaza del Triunfo next to the Cathedral in Sevilla. Stop by and listen (and buy one of his CDs!). He’s a lovely man and a brilliant guitarist.

Last night I was invited by Vinos de Jerez to the opening Sherry On Top event at the Hotel Inglaterra. It was great fun, with a sherry tasting (fino, oloroso, cream cocktail) followed by music by local band Los Quiero and more sherry cocktails.

I woke up with my head full of all the changes I had planned, feeling optimistic, feeling a bit nervous too. But I love Mondays. They always feels like a fresh slate, a brand new week to get started on new projects and plans. Then I reached for my iPhone to snuggle back under the duvet for awhile with Morcilla, and began scrolling through Instagram pics… and I read the news. It floored me, it made me catch my breath, it made me so so sad. Just 69, fucking cancer. An amazing life ended. I don’t know why it felt so personal, though I know thousands of people felt the same. Anyhow, I also felt somehow moved to make sure those changes I’ve been planning happen. Because, dammit, life’s too short.

spotify premium

Ever since Morcilla ate the iPod deck cord (a promised replacement cord never arrived) I’ve been mostly musicless at home. Also when I travel. I used to bring the travel deck with me. Anyhow, finding a new deck with the old iPod connection has also turned out to be impossible. So I decided to try a free trial for Spotify Premium and so far I like it a lot. Does anyone even buy CDs anymore?
