too many “sundays”

mantillasI’m actually glad I’ve been working so much this week (even with awful ear/sinus infection) because it means that I’ve avoided that “too many Sundays” feeling that happens around Christmas and Easter here. I always find Sundays a bit sad and bleh…

To make things even blehier it’s been raining all week (well, all winter…) and so many of the processions have either been cancelled or cut short. But that hasn’t stopped the ladies dressing up in their black dresses and lace mantillas to show that they are mourning the death of Christ. I love this tradition simply because the ensembles are so striking and elegant. I also enjoy the irony of seeing a group of young women decked out in tight black mini-dresses, stiletto heels and sheer black stockings with seams up the back, clearly hoping to be photographed.

They will also be out and about on Good Friday so I hope to get a few more photos.

azahar in bloomI think the worst part of this now more-than-week-long crappy ear/sinus infection thing is that I CAN’T SMELL ANYTHING. Which also means I can’t taste anything. But to not have a sense of smell during the very brief orange blossom season here feels cruel beyond belief. I LIVE for this time of year ever since my first springtime in Sevilla. And now I walk around looking at all these pretty delicate blossoms and listening to people comment on how amazing their fragrance is, and I want to weep.

I did get a bit of a preview when I was in Málaga a few weeks ago as the azahar was already well in blossom then, and thought of it as a bonus. But maybe it’s all I’m going to get this year? That is too sad to even consider.

I’d say the azahar here is good for at least another week or so, as long as heavy rains and wind don’t remove them prematurely. What rotten luck! 😦

san luis day trip[click to biggify]

The Macarena barrio is a hodge-podge of grand old churches, seen-better-days houses and squares, and trendy new shops and restaurants. Yesterday I headed out on a “day trip” to this part of town with my intrepid travelling friends Ang & Ryan (Jets Like Taxis), who are always up for anything new. My main objective was to visit a fabulous new craft centre called Rompemoldes but, as usual, we ended up exploring further afield (in search of tapas, natch).

It was a fab afternoon filled with new sights, great food, beautiful blue skies and lots of walking and talking. Am really going to miss Ang & Ryan when they leave Sevilla next week, heading off on new adventures and challenges. It’s been great having such lovely neighbours these past couple of months.

todays blueAwhile ago my friend Lisa Sadleir, who runs several websites including Family in Spain, posted a “Today’s Blue” photo on Twitter, taken at her home in Mijas on the Costa del Sol.

Since then I’ve been responding with my own “Today’s Blue” Twitter pics and this was today’s. This photo was not retouched in any way or *shudder* Instagrammed.  It was just a quick shot using my iPhone. But man, just look at that BLUE.

Pretty damn fine for midday in February, doncha think?

Twenty years ago I used to call this sky “as blue as Lua’s eyes” referring to the crankiest of all cats who ever existed (but who still managed to wangle her way into my heart). Actually, I still call this sky after Lua. She had the most amazing eyes ever.

Some habits never die.
