Woke up and had no idea where I was. All I knew was that I was still tired and that I was hungry (having just had crisps for dinner the night before). Luckily I’d had the foresight to bring some Nespresso capsules with me, so I was able to make myself a cup of coffee. But by late morning I realised there was nothing for it but to embark on the WAITROSE DEATHMARCH to stock up on a few basics (a 40 minute walk from the apartment). Not so bad going there as it was a pleasant day and I took the river walk. And I was rewarded by this unexpected view of the Shard when I turned a corner.
london day 2 (1)

But the way back (carrying the shopping) was long and, well, long. So once I got back I was barely hungry anymore and made do with some cheese and crackers I’d bought. About an hour later (maybe 3.30?) I was feeling quite drowsy so decided to lie down for half an hour before meeting my friends Julie & Steve at Vivat Bacchus at 5.45 (dinner at 28º-50º was booked for 7.45).

So imagine my shock when, after lying down and closing my eyes “for a few minutes” I opened them again at exactly 5.45! WTF! I flew out of bed, texted them immediately, had fast shower, threw on some clothes and flew out the door, eventually arriving at Vivat Bacchus 7.00 ish. I felt bad because Julie & Steve had just come in for the afternoon/evening (their train home was booked for 11.30) and I’d lost two precious hours with them.

london day 2 (2)But oh well… as usual we had a wonderful time together. And there was just enough time to enjoy a gorgeous bottle of South African chardonnay (not usually a favourite but this one was amazing) at Vivat Bacchus before heading out for dinner. Julie had even booked our food ahead for us at 28º-50º – the massive ribeye daily special – which was delicious. It was also nice to have everything taken care of and not have to think about what to order, for a change. So we could just relax and enjoy each others company. Next time dinner is on me as J & S will be coming to Sevilla for Christmas and I’ll be in charge of Christmas Eve dinner. Can’t wait.

to doThose of you who know me also know that I love to organise, and to feel organised, but every now and then a whole whack of things suddenly need DOING that I hadn’t planned on doing. It all started yesterday when my new MOVISTAR television service went kaput and only basic service was available (not a hardship, but hey, I’m paying extra for the extra stuff), and then I discovered that my big beast of a laptop Sterling was operating on half-battery even while plugged in. Dammit. So I had to shut him down and start using tiny Anchoa until I could find out what the problem was. On top of that I still had tons of tax shit to sort out before meeting with my accountant Sandra today, so when I got up this morning I decided that the Sandra stuff had priority, and somehow got it all done by midday, then I hopped into a taxi to catch her before lunchtime.

Yes, the rest of this post will be just as boring, so read on at your own peril.

After leaving Sandra’s it was time to stop in at La Doma in Nervión, a place I adore but don’t get to often because, well, it’s in Nervión. Thanks to Sandra I now get to La Doma at least four times a year at the end of each quarter (notice last update was end of April) because it’s about a five minute walk from her office. So after possibly a bit too much lunch, my friend/flatmate/cohort Peter and I walked half an hour back to the centre in 44º heat (and hardly any shade). At which point we stopped in at my home away from home Vineria San Telmo for a cold drink and a rest.

It would have been sensible to just go home from there, but I also knew I needed to get Sterling back in action, so we wandered over to FNAC to see if they could help, and 35€ later I had a new multi-jack transformer-charger-thingy. From there it seemed a good idea to stop in at Telefónica, especially when I saw Super Paco was at his desk. And although it took an hour of my life that I’ll never get back, Paco sorted out my billing problems, showed me how to access my account online, helped me choose a new “package” for when my promo one runs out this month, and told me who to contact if I was still having problems with the TV service. Oh, and for 32€ I can get a booster thingy so that the WIFI is stronger upstairs. I love this guy.

Well, by now it was going on 7.00 pm (we’d left the house at 1.30) and we were desperately in need of more cold drinks. But first I had to get a new black fan, which proved impossible, so I got a nice dark green one instead. Okay, it wasn’t impossible to get a black one, but I was being given the tourist treatment (gaaahh!) and took the green one because it was the price I wanted to pay. And it’s lovely, actually. But why quote elevated prices just because I’m not Spanish?

Pit stop on the way home for a frosty cold beer at Bar Alfalfa, which we went to because not much else was open at that hour in the barrio. It was okay for a beer, but I always feel like it’s not very clean (there’s a nasty musty smell when you walk in) and the food is clearly “for tourists”, an odd mix of bruschetta and paella.

Then finally HOME to cranky cats wanting their dinner, AIRCON slapped on, laundry put up on the line, new power cord successfully installed, a refreshing shower and… a look at tomorrow’s To Do list. Don’t worry, I won’t be doing To Do’s every day, it was just kind of nice how it all worked out today, felt quite satisfying. And that I was able to get all this stuff done at a leisurely pace because … I’M ON HOLIDAY. More on that mañana. 😉

amador (2)

It was almost two years ago that my pal Antonio Carrasco, who I met while he was working at La Azotea in Sevilla, told me he was moving to Málaga to start a new job at Restaurante Amador, which belongs to the the splendid hotel Villa Guadalupe. And he said once he was settled in I HAD to come and see him at the restaurant. And I said – hey great! – because of course I am ALWAYS in Málaga so of course we’d be seeing each other again very soon. Ahem…

amador (1)So this visit I was determined to finally visit the restaurant and, as Victor had already been up to see the place, and had also met Antonio, we decided to make a date and go together. You see, part of the reason I hadn’t gone earlier is that Villa Guadalupe is located up on a mountain way the heck out of the centre of town, so you do need a car to get there. But let me tell you right now… it’s worth it.

I mean, obviously it’s a “special occasion” type of place, though the prices aren’t prohibitive. The food, the wines, the view… all make for a superb night out. Antonio had come up with a personalised tasting menu for us, including some smaller versions of dishes on the regular menu and one spectacular special of the day. I’ll be writing a proper review over on Azahar Tapas soon, but I think you get the idea from the photos.

amador (3)

Here are Victor and Antonio – bless Antonio’s heart that he got in a bottle of Botani just for me as it’s not on their wine list. He also recommended a couple of other wines to pair with certain dishes, which were simply perfect. It was a fabulous evening and the only “downer” was that I had had my heart set on getting down to the beach to see the bonfires of San Juan, but after the Antequera Adventure ealier that day, and this amazing meal at Amador, there was simply no energy left. Instead we watched the midnight fireworks from our privileged viewing spot overlooking the city and harbour and enjoyed a nightcap before heading home. Thank you Antonio! xx

north southToday I got to introduce two good friends to each other: Anna (Galicia) and Victor (Málaga). We met up for a quick lunch at Las Teresas and had a fabulous time. Looking forward to seeing Victor again on his home turf during my next Málaga Getaway in June. And there are also plans afoot for me to visit Anna in Santiago de Compostela (first time ever!) in August. Other getaways may include San Sebastían and London. Looks like it’s going to be a busy summer.

christmas is over

So that’s it for another year. This was a very unChristmassy Christmas at home – more than usual I mean, given that my flatmate is a Grinch. Also, my tree lights died, I had no friends over for Christmas meals (though I did get to enjoy some time with this fab family on Christmas Day), and I didn’t get around to seeing any of the special Christmas events around town. But that’s okay. I have a feeling that next Christmas is really going to sparkle. Lots of changes coming up in 2016. Looking forward to it! 🙂
