campanario

The other day my friend Javier (who was once my flatmate a million years ago) sent me this photo. Javi and his wife Laura have led quite a nomadic life these past years but they continue to keep a storage unit back home and he said random finds like this make it all worthwhile. This t-shirt is from 1999 when Javi did a brief stint working at Bar Campanario.

My first time at Campanario (which no longer exists) was when I drove down from Salamanca in 1993 with a friend and with all my worldly belongings in the back of his car, along with some precious cargo – my cats Lua and her son Sunny.

We arrived in Sevilla at 8 pm, as previously arranged (to meet landlord and pick up keys), and miraculously found parking almost in front of my new home in calle Mateos Gago. But there was no landlord. And as this was 1993 there were no cell phones, so we just waited. And waited. Finally we asked the bar we were parked in front of if we could get something to eat and drink, but we didn’t really want to leave the car because of the cats and all. And bless them, the people at Bar Campanario actually brought food and drink out to our car, like we were at a drive in, and it was lovely. The landlord finally showed up at 11pm full of apologies, but we were fine (and the cats were happy to see their improvised litter box!).

Bar Campanario ended up becoming my local, heck it even became my living room (my studio apt across the street was tiny). The owners became friends and still are. This photo from Javi brought back a flood of memories, which I’ve shared with the family.

im walking here

As I become more and more mobility challenged oh boy am I developing not only a lot of extra empathy for people even more challenged than me but I am also not afraid to let stupid and selfish able-bodied assholes know just how stupid and selfish they are being. I don’t know why. Usually I avoid confrontation like it was Covid, but maybe because this is still relatively new for me I still don’t quite personally identify with being “disabled” so it feels like I’m standing up for others? Whatever. This is what has been happening.

I walk down the street, slowly and painfully hobbling along with my crutches, clearly not walking with any ease of motion. And then… PEOPLE GET IN MY WAY. By this I mean a group of people will be walking up a street and somehow expect me to move over for them… or on one of our many narrow sidewalks here where only one and half people can actually walk abreast, some of them think I’m the one who is going to step out into oncoming traffic to let them by. What the fuck is wrong with these people?? I’m hobbling. I’m using two crutches. Going very slowly. And well, since I’m kinda new at this game, it totally pisses me off because I haven’t yet got to the point of accepting this and, frankly, I don’t plan to.

So what do I do? Well, I simply stand my ground. I’m not moving out of the way for fucking anybody. And the result is, of course, they have to move. Good. They have perfectly functional limbs. I guess I’m also thinking that I am taking a stance for all of us who can’t get around so easily… to make other people aware that they should be more aware. And just basically be polite.

The other issue here is on our narrow one-way streets in the centre, many of which have signs posted saying PRIORITY PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS. For the most part cars and taxis expect people to huddle in doorways to let them pass as there is usually no sidewalk to speak of. Twice this past week this happened to me and I was like… what the fuck is wrong with you?? You’re sitting comfortably in a car, you are coming up a pedestrian prioritised street, you see someone hobbling along on crutches and YOU EXPECT THEM TO PAINFULLY CLIMB ONTO A NARROW CURB AND HUDDLE IN A DOORWAY FOR YOU?? Well fuck that shit. Both times this happened I stood my ground. The cars approached when I was already half-way down the street but they just kept coming even though there were several other people walking in the street (and diving into doorways). Not me. I stood in the middle of the street and motioned that they had to back up to the square (because they shouldn’t have entered the street in the first place if they saw pedestrians). And both times I got so much support from onlookers saying “you tell ’em”, “take your time señora”, “they are the ones in the wrong”… which was quite uplifting.

So expect me to be doing my Ratso Rizzo thing all over town for the foreseeable. I’m walking here!

dream house

This is one of several of my dream houses here, where I would imagine some day having a top floor apartment. I mean, it probably never would have happened anyhow, but now that this landmark building houses tourist apartments, hope is dashed forever.

almost like new

I’ve been sort of half-assed looking for new shoes as sandal weather is about to abruptly end. Even though I got a couple pairs of new shoes just before Covid lockdown I keep going back to these trusty old Campers I bought in 2017. To say they were looking the worse for wear would be a serious understatement, but damn they are just so comfortable, so I decided to take them to a shoe repair place down the street from me. What could it hurt?

I expected the guy to tell me the shoes were a lost cause, but he took a long serious look at them, touching the leather, checking the soles and stitching and said that they were worth saving. It would cost 55 euros. At first I balked at this but then he took one shoe, cleaned and polished the toe and said “see? this is how they will look after, only even better because I will condition the leather and give the soles a good cleaning too”. So what the heck. I mean even if they only last another winter or two 55€ is much cheaper than a new pair of shoes (important factor now) and with all the trouble I’m having walking the last thing I want to worry about is also having painful feet.

Yesterday I got a Whatsapp message from him with these two photos saying ” your shoes are ready!” and wow, what a difference. I really should have taken a before pic so you could properly appreciate the magic this guy worked. Seeing them in person they look even better and I am so happy to have my old Campers revived and back home. Looks like I’ll be needing them this weekend.
