freedumb

Spain’s state of emergency officially ended at midnight on Saturday, a day earlier than originally planned, and predictably streets throughout the country filled with drunken assholes celebrating their freedumb into the wee hours. It is to weep. Lots of tweets from health care workers expressing everything from fear to heartbreak to rage.

The most important changes are the end of the curfew, extension of opening hours for hospitality, allowing large group events, but all of these still require that people wear masks (inside and outside) and maintain social distancing. Which is the ONLY reason I’m going anywhere in the next couple of weeks. The government says they are adopting a gradual de-escalation with the goal of returning to “normal” by July. Because hey, it worked so well last time. Gawd help us…

passports, spain

Since sometime late January I started leaving notices in my calendar that it was time to renew my Canadian passport. Even though I knew I had a few months to go I also knew that I would put it off, and put it off, and put it off… until the passport expired and I was in a real mess. The big stumbling block was getting my new passport photo. You all know me by now. I go way out of my way to never have my photo taken. I’ve been like this since, well, forever. It doesn’t help that I think I look hideous all the time so of course I don’t want that “captured” on film. Even when I was young and pretty I felt like this, so now that I am old and “ahem” as far as pretty as a girl can get, you can imagine it hasn’t got any easier.

And so today I took it on the chin(s), just got it done, including with Covid hair (last cut was in July 2020), but really the hair was the least of it. Where the fuck did all those chins come from in the past five years? Why do I look like my previous photo’s long suffering mother? Why didn’t I opt for the ten-year passport five years ago? So many questions.

Meanwhile, no doubt five years from now I’ll look back on this photo and think, hey I didn’t look so bad after all! I mean, at least in my previous passport photo I still had a jawline.

no feria

covid-19, feria, no feria, sevilla

The Plaza San Fransicso is all dressed up with nowhere to go after the various “no Feria” activities were (thankfully) cancelled this week. Starting Saturday, and throughout the following week, there were supposed to be flamenco fashion shows along the Avenida, various outdoor concerts, private group lunches in selected Casas Palacios, and yeah, even bullfights. Which leads me to ask… what the actual fuck were these people thinking?? It’s a fair. Yes, it’s Spain’s biggest Feria and, no, we didn’t get to have one last year, and it turns out we don’t get to have one this year. But so what? Because it’s just a fucking fair.

Don’t get me wrong, I love so many of our festivities here, and have also been missing them. I’ve lived in Sevilla for almost 30 years, so these have become a part of my way of life. But I mean… PANDEMIA, guys. And so, taking into consideration those who have lost their jobs, businesses, homes – their lives! – I don’t think it’s not a huge ASK for still healthy people to just say, hey no problem, we’ll do it next year. Something to look forward to.ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

fitness, steps, walks

I don’t remember when I stopped my (almost) daily walks, but it’s been a long time. And looking back, I have no idea why I stopped. Because of winter? I dunno. But last week when I ended up doing over 14,000 steps (while going that extra mile for Happy Hour 2 for 1 pisco sours at Lima) I realised how it good it felt to walk that much. And so I’ve started up again with (almost) daily walks of (almost) 10,000 steps. I can mostly avoid contact with people, unless I stop for a cold beer or to pick something up at the supermarket, so it’s not really like “going out” and I still feel like I’m staying safe. Anyhow, it’s been a week and it feels good. I hope I can keep it up. ๐Ÿคž
