service charge

This week my pal Lucy and I met for our annual “birthday lunch” (hers is on the 8th, mine on the 7th) and this time I asked Lucy if she wanted to try somewhere new I’d been meaning to visit. And yeah, she was up for it. I had high hopes because this is a second location of a restaurant I’ve known for years, and this was supposed to be their “tapas bar” version. And well, it started off fine, we had a nice table and proceeded to order a couple of snacks to start. But things went a bit downhill after that. Our waiter was obsequious the point of being both fawning and rude at the same time (you know the type) and obviously thought we were tourists, so when we later made a couple of comments about the food he very rudely/politely put us in our place. I mean, in the end it was okay overall, nothing great but nothing awful. UNTIL THE BILL CAME.

You know me – SHAWN OF THE BREAD –  I almost always send back bread that is immediately brought to the table because 1) I usually don’t want bread and 2) I don’t want to be charged some stupid amount for something I haven’t ordered. I do know a few places that offer amazing bread and I am very happy to order it when I actually want bread (they ask first) and pay the price on the menu. Fair enough.

To be clear… it isn’t legal to charge for any food brought to your table that you haven’t ordered. Things like bread and olives, etc need to be listed on the menu as a food item and, if you order it, you pay for it. Just like anything else on the menu. No problem. But if it shows up on your table when you sit down – and even if you eat it – you are not obliged to pay the charge because you didn’t order it. Fact.

Which brings me to fucking service charges. Most places these days do the sneaky BREAD/SERVICE CHARGE addition to their menu and so even if you send back the bread (like me) the bill will still show the charge and if you question it the waiter will often say it’s a service charge. ILLEGAL.

I mean FFS… bread is a fixed cost, like ice and napkins, all bars and restaurants know what they pay for bread each month, and it always used to be factored into the price of the overall bill. Until some greedy smart ass came up with the idea of using a “bread charge” like an entrance fee. And suddenly everyone was doing it. I mean, why not? You get people to pay an extra 1-3 euros per head just to walk into your bar or restaurant and FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING EXTRA.

That’s where the law comes in handy. Except so few people seem to know about it. And they also don’t know (especially tourists) that this “service charge” is not given to the hard-working staff, it goes straight into their pockets. So people come here going OH WOW, EVERYTHING IS SO CHEAP, except it’s not cheap for us, because we don’t make as much money as in other countries. Then they go AND YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE TO TIP IN SPAIN. Honestly, I despair sometimes. Anyhoodle, this rant is shooting off into a few directions here when the point is to let people know they do not have to pay for anything they haven’t ordered and especially not for a illegal service charge. Hope this helps.

rude food

I admit I chuckled when I was served this the other day. And when I pointed out the obvious to the barman he said “omg, let us make you another one for your photos!”. I said it was fine as I wasn’t planning to post it anywhere… but then I did. I didn’t mention the bar’s name but wrote that this was a case when the term #foodporn was justified. And my god, it’s turned out to be my most “liked” Instagram post ever (330 and counting) with lots of comments too. Not sure what this says about my followers though… 😅

sevilla tapas logo

Well… I say new. To be honest I’ve never actually had a proper logo for the Sevilla Tapas food tours, though I’ve used various orange-themed images over the years over all my messy websites. This was a team effort with my friend Paul who, back in August, also helped me turn my hot mess of websites into a manageable dishevelment. And so this week Paul fine-tuned the basic logo concept I came up with and then properly vectored it for me.

The “problem” I have with my “brand” is that I am both Azahar Sevilla and Sevilla Tapas and they are kind of one overlapping brand with different… um, thingys going on. But probably people know me more as Sevilla Tapas. So after I saw that jerkoff using Sevilla Tapas Tour on his social media I decided to take a stand and reboot Sevilla Tapas Tours, an account I set up years ago (2013) in case anyone tried to use my name. In hindsight I should have also set up Sevilla Tapas Tour but whatever. Anyhow I’m a bit in transition at the moment so you may see some changes coming up for 2024. At least I hope so!

clausura año arroz

This week the Academia Sevilliana de Gastronomía y Turismo held its closing gala for the Año del Arroz de las Marismas del Guadalquivir. Who knew that Sevilla produces 40% of all the rice grown in Spain? Who even knew that Sevilla produces rice? Anyhow, the closing ceremony brought everything full circle with the recognition of the various collaborators over the past year. As I have only been a member of the Academy since late June I missed most of the activities but look forward to taking part in next year’s Año del Aceite de Oliva Virgen Extra de Estepa.

Afterwards we were treated to a delicious tapas lunch, including three rice dishes, provided by Restaurante Manolo Mayo. As a newbie I didn’t realise I was supposed to stick around for the group photo of the Academy members (duh) and headed straight to the dining area with everyone else. I did get a pic taken later on with the Gastro Guías but really felt like a dunce for missing my first Academia foto de familia. Oh well, next time.

on being proactive

gamba taco

What does a gorgeous looking gamba taco have to do with being proactive? Well I’m here to tell ya.

Today I decided to stop waiting around for my upcoming appointments with my oncologist and also the breast ultrasound that was ordered after my mammogram… last spring!? So off I went to the hospital to talk directly to the Oncology secretary. And well, damn good thing I did too! After more than an hour wait – with next to nobody wearing a fucking mask IN THE FUCKING ONCOLOGY WAITING ROOM – I managed to secure an appointment for two weeks from now. The hold up, it seems, was that they were waiting for me to do the second colonoscopy, which I did in August, but blah blah… it somehow wasn’t registered in their files.

Then it was off to the Women’s Hospital to ask about the ultrasound but by the time I got there the office had closed, so now I will have to call. I hate calling. But I will.

After that, given the location of the Women’s Hospital, I suggested to Peter and we go to a cosy local bar about ten minutes away for a beer and a snack. Well, it wasn’t ten minutes, more like twenty after having to go under rail tracks and and back up, whatever… we got there to be told the tables were all reserved for members. Fuck. So we kept walking… until Tradevo Nervión.

Tradevo is one of my fave places, though I usually go to the central location, and well, we literally stumbled in really needing to SIT DOWN only to see the entire bar and restaurant jam-packed full. Then someone said “Shawn, is that you?” and we were whisked out to the back patio with a little heater beside us and all was well. There was a quick cold beer, followed by a couple of tapitas, a glass of wine, and after that lovely experience it was just a ten minute walk to the Tram to take us five minutes from home.

And so… appointment secured, a lovely light lunch and almost 10,000 steps!
