I follow almost 1700 people on my @SevillaTapas Instagram account and, thanks to the odious algorithm, seldom see the people l want to see most in my TL. I end up having to hunt friends down when l notice l haven’t seen their posts for awhile, then sometimes catch up on 2-3 months of their photos. Not exactly the point of the platform, is it?

Anyhow, if you happen to see this and haven’t seen me in your Instagram TL for awhile… well, l post stuff there every day, and also on my personal account @azahar and my other biz account @welovetapas. So if you stop by and leave a like or comment, I’ll pop over to yours. Otherwise l may not know you’re there. 😘

Yet another social media connection. Cathy sent me an email a couple of weeks ago saying “I hope you don’t think this is weird but I’ve been wanting to message you for years but never got around to it and was a little intimidated.” She went on to say that she’d be back in Sevilla soon (she’s been here many times) and that she’d love to meet up. So today was the day.

We went to Bartolomea, a place I’d been meaning to go back to for awhile (so many bars, so little time…) and since Cathy is staying right above the bar it seemed like a good time. We had a fab lunch, and a few wines, and really hit it off. Afterwards we stopped in at Vermutería Yo Soy Tu Padre for a penúltima and to visit Esteban (my future husband 😉 ). Made tentative plans with Esteban and his friend Jota to do some Bodega Research over the next month or so, which is quite exciting for me. More on that later.

Anyhow, it was lovely meeting a new friend and possible future neighbour. Cathy will be back soon and also has plans to retire somewhere in Andalucía. Meanwhile we’ll stay in touch.

La Penúltima!

Sometimes l get in trouble on my Sevilla Tapas Instagram for not “staying in my lane” and *GASP* having opinions about things not related to food & wine. So @azahar is now my personal Insta account where l get to say whatever l damn well please. Follow if you dare! 😉 Just kidding, it’ll mostly be more travel pics, bit less food, possibly more cats. See you there! 💃🏻

loo brush backlash!

Soooooo… have been working on a blog post about tourism in Sevilla. Well, it applies pretty much everywhere I’m sure. Just putting some thoughts together about the effect of mass tourism on travel destinations, and also about how places are so often marketed in a misleading way. One of those horrid catchphrases that I’m sure you’ve all heard by now is LIVE LIKE A LOCAL.

To wit I’ve been capturing some photos of how I – a local – actually live in Sevilla. This was one of them. Funny, right? Well, apparently not. I got some serious verbal backlash when I posted this on Instagram a few days ago with #livinglikealocal and #livelikealocal hashtags. This was followed by a dozen or so “unfollows”. And I had been SO CLOSE to reaching 5000 followers  😉

I would have quoted the Divine Ms M – FUCK ‘EM IF THEY CAN’T TAKE A JOKE – but I’m sure that would have just got me into more trouble. Anyhoodle… will let you know when I finish.  🙂

Demelza @demelzamd and Zoltan @zoltanpolger21 co-owners of Restaurante Salitre in Menorca. I first “met” Demelza online a few years ago when she was working as my friend José Pizarro’s PA in London. At the time Zoltan was also working with José as head chef. Then they moved to Menorca to open their own restaurant. And although they have been in town a few times (Demelza is from a village not far from Sevilla) we have never managed to meet up. UNTIL… yesterday!

I was at Bodeguita Romero, sitting at the bar with two tapas tour clients, and saw this guy kind of eyeballing me from across the room. Then a lovely woman came up and said… are you Shawn? They were just passing through and what luck that we happened to cross paths at the Bodeguita. We had a short chat, since I was working, it really was great to finally meet. Hopefully next time we can go out for a few tapitas and sherry together.
