km0, sevilla

For all those years I lived in the barrio Santa Cruz I thought I was living in the CENTRE of Sevilla. Turns out I was just living next to the Cathedral. The actual KM0 is not far from Las Setas in Plaza Encarnación. Which means I now live more central than ever. And I really notice the difference, in terms of how quick and easy it is to walk pretty much everywhere. Including to my old barrio. This physical centre is also a lot more vibrant and – so far – still a place where locals can afford to live.

How close do you live to the KM0 in your town?

I am finally resigned to the idea that it is NO LONGER SUMMER. I’ve swapped over my wardrobe and have put the sandals away. It’ll be tights and shoes until March now! And the duvet is on the bed, which actually feels nice and cosy – also, the cats love it! Still haven’t put the heat on at home yet though, but reckon that’ll happen soon. So yeah, this is winter (we don’t really get autumn here). Some days it’s still warm enough to wear just a light jacket, but the rains have started so there’s also that. But then there are beautiful wispy cloud days like this, which I also love. Hola winter, and welcome.

esperanza de triana, processions, semana santa, sevilla, triana

La Esperanza de Triana is one of the two “grande dames” of Semana Santa in Sevilla (the other being La Macarena) and they both go out (salir) during the overnight (madrugada) processions between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. For the rest of the year they are on display in their respective home churches. This is why Thursday’s procession to the Cathedral was a Salida Extraordinara (extraordinary outing), which was followed by the return procession on Saturday. ,

The occasion for the Salida Exraordinara was the celebration of the sixth centenary of the founding of the brotherhood, the oldest in Sevilla, culminating with a commemorative eucharist mass on November 3rd at 11 am at the altar of the Jubilee of the Seo Hispalense inside the Cathedral.

I caught the outgoing procession on Thursday, as it happened to be passing near my home, and I happened to be on my way home at the time. It’s been many years since I last saw the Esperanza, as she comes out during the night and returns quite early Friday morning during Easter week (and to be honest, my going out all night – and going out early – days are long over). Even though I’m not religious I quite enjoy the occasional procession, and so it was nice to see one of Sevilla’s most beautiful pasos again.

Tiro la Línea is a residential neighbourhood some way out on the south side of town, and I wouldn’t normally have a reason to be here, but my friend Anna @annalibera was in town, and as this is her old neighbourhood, I thought it would be a good time to visit the little local market there. A tapeo was mooted, and so, accompanied by friend (and auxilary stomach) Peter @SVQConcierge I set off to meet her there.

Last week my friend and neighbour Esteban’s fabulous bar Vermutería Yo Soy Tu Padre was broken into in the middle of the night. The bastards made off with thousands of euros worth of wines, computers and other equipment. But Esteban and his family rallied and were up and running again in very short order.

So if you live in, or are visiting, Sevilla, stop by to show your support- and also to have some amazing house made vermouths and delicious tapas.

Esteban
