AKA Lazy Susan. A bit weird that in Spain they use a literal term (bandeja giratora = revolving tray) rather than a literal translation. In Portuguese they are known as “Susana preguiçosa”, which would be “Susana perezosa” in Spanish.

Anyhoodle, do you have any idea how hard these f*ckers are to find in Sevilla? That is, without spending the better part of a day hiking out to IKEA on the bus (which isn’t actually in Sevilla anyhow)? Well, it’s hard. I’ve been looking out for Lazy Susans ever since I moved into the latest casa az last February and have not seen them anywhere. But it turns out that a few places have started stocking them for the holiday season as they tend to be used here more for entertaining than the practicial use I’ve always thought they were made for.

Which is to be able to get at stuff in corner cupboards.

As you can see in the photo in this blog post, I’ve got a very deep corner cupboard just above the microwave. I never know what’s in there and can’t reach into it without getting up on the footstep thingy. And so yesterday I finally managed to find a couple of inexpensive Lazy Susans made of bamboo, which fit perfectly into my corner cupboards. Am now thinking of getting another one for the cupboard below. And maybe a smaller one for my spice cupboard! I’m so pathetically thrilled that I can now easily reach up for access to this cupboard after so long. But hey, simple pleasures and all that.

Anyone know why they are called Lazy Susans?

recyle bin graffiti competition

Yesterday afternoon I came across a group of graffiti artists participating in a competition, painting glass recycle bins (concurso contenedor vidrio). This has been going on for the last few years. Or at least, I’ve noticed the painted bins around town before but have never seen the annual contest in progress until now.

I was pleased to see a lot more stylishness to the painting this year, rather than the usual graffiti mishmash of wonky letters and weird images. Most artists had a picture of what they were painting on top of their bin, some showing how they worked out the dimensions, and it was quite impressive to see how they turned a flat painting into a three-dimensional one.

A couple of my favourites were the flamenco dancer and the “Eye of Cthulhu” one below, which of course reminded me of my friend raincoaster, so I made a special collage of it just for her.

Took this pic late this morning on my terrace…

I was a bit miffed because, after almost two months since the last major rainfall here, I wasn’t happy about it happening again on my Sunday off. Anticipating a rainy weekend – and possibly entire rainy week ahead – I did four loads of washing yesterday so I could get things dry. Such an exciting life I lead.  But the rain held off yesterday. And almost did today…

At midday Nog and I went out for a walk to check out a couple of new tapas bars in Triana – well, at least they were new to me. I’ve had so many tapas tours this month that I haven’t had time to go out and research new places for my Sevilla Tapas blog. So after the black clouds dispersed we made our way across the river. Turned out the first stop was closed on Sunday, so then we went to try out the second one. And well… at 2.15pm on a Sunday there wasn’t one person in the place, which did not bode well. As we were backing out of there I saw the owner of the tapas bar next door – Las Golondrinas – which is one of my all-time favourites. So we decided to just have a nice non-working lunch there. And it was lovely. The owner Paco kept coming over to suggest dishes and make sure we had drinks. We even got to try a couple of new tapas. And then… the skies opened up and we could barely see across the street. No problem. We ordered another round of drinks and a tapita and waited out the deluge…

Now back at home totally slobbing out and quite enjoying it.
How is your Sunday going?

gourmet tapas, sevilla, seville, tapas, tapas tours

So do you remember the fabulous Gourmet Tapas Tour I did last week? Well, I was sworn to secrecy until now but the article came out this morning so I’m free to blab it to the world. The tour was actually part of an interview I was asked to give to the Wall Street Journal Europe about my tapas tours. London-based food columnist Bruce Palling was down in Málaga province for a few days and he wanted to come up to Sevilla for the day to check out the “new tapas scene” and see how tapas have been evolving recently.

I met Bruce and his wife Lucinda for a lunchtime tapas tour and we went to four tapas bars where I knew they were doing tapas with a twist, still using traditional local ingredients but creating new and exciting dishes. And well, I had a great time. Bruce and Lucinda are true foodies and were great company and, as always, I felt proud to show off some of the places that I really love.

When I asked Bruce how he found out about me he said that when he was asking around London about who to contact in Sevilla about tapas my name kept coming up, so he decided to get in touch. Although he didn’t name names I knew it had to be some of the London twitter connections I’ve made over the past few years. Anyhow, we shall see if this helps bring in some more business, but I’m actually just so thrilled to see “my name in lights” and to read about how much Bruce enjoyed the tapas tour. blue, cathedral, seville, video

After posting those photos that I took on my way home last night I remembered this short video I took walking home with Susan a couple of years ago. It’s called “almost that blue” because we’d just missed the moment when the sky is the colour shown in yesterday’s pics. For about ten minutes every night the sky turns the most fabulous blue just before the sun sets…
